Onherreturntothehouse,Josephineapparentlycontentedherselfwithreceivingthebulletinofthestranger'sconditionfromtheservant,forshedidnotenterhisroom。Shehadobtainednotheoryoflastnight'sincidentfromherparents,who,beyondaquerulousagitationthatwasquickenedbythenewsofhisreturntoreason,refrainedfromeventhatinsidiouscommentwhichshehalffearedwouldfollow。Whenanotherdaypassedwithoutherseeinghim,sheneverthelesswasconsciousofalittleembarrassmentwhenhisattendantbroughthertherequestthatshewouldgivehimamoment'sspeechintheporch,whitherhehadbeenremoved。

Suddenlyafaintshout,apparentlysomewhereinthevicinityoftheline,broughtoutaperfectlyclearresponse,followedbytheaudiblemurmurofvoices,whichitwasimpossibletolocalize。Yetthewholefieldwassodevoidofanysuggestionofhumanlifeormotionthatitseemedratherasifthevastexpanseitselfhadbecomesuddenlyarticulateandintelligible。
