  plausibleetymology,forhisfriendtheAvvocatoNegriofCasale-Monferratotoldhimthatthemysterious"waitee"isactuallyawordintheTicinesedialect,and,ifitwerewritten,wouldappearas"vuaitee。"Itmeans"stop"or"lookhere,"andisusedtoattractattention。ButlerusedtocouplethislittlemistakeofhiswithanotherthathemadeinTheAuthoressoftheOdyssey,whenhesaid,"ScheriameansJutland——apieceoflandjuttingoutintothesea。"
