  Thusitwaswiththetwochildren。Allhislifehehaddislikedchildren。
  Hehatedandfearedtheirhands。ThelessonswerenottenderthathehadlearnedoftheirtyrannyandcrueltyinthedaysoftheIndianvillages。

  Allthiswasamatterofdevelopment,andtooktime。Nextinhisregard,afterthechildren,wasJudgeScott。Thereweretworeasons,possibly,forthis。First,hewasevidentlyavaluablepossessionofthemaster's,andnext,hewasundemonstrative。WhiteFanglikedtolieathisfeetonthewideporchwhenhereadthenewspaper,fromtimetotimefavoringWhiteFangwithalookoraword——untroublesometokensthatherecognizedWhiteFang'spresenceandexistence。Butthiswasonlywhenthemasterwasnotaround。Whenthemasterappeared,allotherbeingsceasedtoexistsofarasWhiteFangwasconcerned。
