InAugust,1895,justbeforesailingforAustralia,Mr。Clemensissuedthefollowingstatement:
"IthasbeenreportedthatIsacrificed,forthebenefitofthecreditors,thepropertyofthepublishingfirmwhosefinancialbackerIwas,andthatIamnowlecturingformyownbenefit。
"Thisisanerror。Iintendthelectures,aswellastheproperty,forthecreditors。Thelawrecognizesnomortgageonaman'sbrains,andamerchantwhohasgivenupallhehasmaytakeadvantageofthelawsofinsolvencyandmaystartfreeagainforhimself。ButIamnotabusinessman,andhonorisahardermasterthanthelaw。Itcannotcompromiseforlessthanonehundredcentsonadollar,anditsdebtsareneveroutlawed。
