  JeanBapttePoquelin,betterknownbyhstagenameofMoliere,standswithoutarivalattheheadofFrenchcomedy。BornatParinJanuary,1622,wherehfatherheldapositionintheroyalhousehold,hewaseducatedattheJesuitCollegedeClermont,andforsometimestudiedlaw,whichhesoonabandonedforthestage。HlifewasspentinParandintheprovinces,acting,directingperformances,managingtheaters,andwritingplays。Hehadhshareofapplausefromthekingandfromthepublic;butthesatireinhcomediesmadehimmanyenemies,andhewastheobjectofthemostvenomousattacksandthemostimpossibleslanders。Nordidhefindmuchsolaceathome;forhemarriedunfortunately,andtheunhappinessthatfollowedincreasedthebitternessthatpublichostilityhadbroughtintohlife。OnFebruary17,1673,whileactingin"LaMaladeImaginaire,"thelastofhmasterpieces,hewasseizedwithillnessanddiedafewhourslater。
