Nowthesebeingdead,whatdotherestofthetownsfolk,but,asmenthathadfoundafool’sparadise,theypresently,asaforewashinted,falltoprovethetruthofthegiant’swords。And,first,theydidasIll—pausehadtaughtthem;
theylooked,theyconsideredtheyweretakenwiththeforbiddenfruit;theytookthereof,anddideat;andhavingeaten,theybecameimmediatelydrunkentherewith。Sotheyopenthegate,bothEar—gateandEye—gate,andletinDiaboluswithallhisbands,quiteforgettingtheirgoodShaddai,hislaw,andthejudgmentthathehadannexed,withsolemnthreatening,tothebreachthereof。
Diabolus,havingnowobtainedentranceinatthegatesofthetown,marchesuptothemiddlethereof,tomakehisconquestassureashecould;andfinding,bythistime,theaffectionsofthepeoplewarmlyincliningtohim,he,asthinkingitwasbeststrikingwhiletheironishot,madethisfurtherdeceivablespeechuntothem,saying,’Alas,mypoorMansoul!Ihavedonetheeindeedthisservice,astopromotetheetohonour,andtogreatenthyliberty;but,alas!alas!poorMansoul,thouwantestnowonetodefendthee;forassurethyselfthatwhenShaddaishallhearwhatisdone,hewillcome;forsorrywillhebethatthouhastbrokenhisbonds,andcasthiscordsawayfromthee。Whatwiltthoudo?Wiltthou,afterenlargement,sufferthyprivilegestobeinvadedandtakenaway,orwhatwiltresolvewiththyself?’
Thentheyallwithoneconsentsaidtothisbramble,’Dothoureignoverus。’Soheacceptedthemotion,andbecamethekingofthetownofMansoul。Thisbeingdone,thenextthingwastogivehimpossessionofthecastle,andsoofthewholestrengthofthetown。Wherefore,intothecastlehegoes;itwasthatwhichShaddaibuiltinMansoulforhisowndelightandpleasure;thisnowwasbecomeadenandholdforthegiantDiabolus。
Now,havinggotpossessionofthisstatelypalaceorcastle,whatdothhebutmakesitagarrisonforhimself,andstrengthensandfortifiesitwithallsortsofprovision,againsttheKingShaddai,orthosethatshouldendeavourtheregainingofittohimandhisobedienceagain。
Thisdone,butnotthinkinghimselfyetsecureenough,inthenextplacehebethinkshimselfofnewmodellingthetown;andsohedoes,settingupone,andputtingdownanotheratpleasure。WhereforemyLordMayor,whosenamewasmyLordUnderstanding,andMr。Recorder,whosenamewasMr。
Conscience,theseheputoutofplaceandpower。
AsformyLordMayor,thoughhewasanunderstandingman,andonetoothathadcompliedwiththerestofthetownofMansoulinadmittingthegiantintothetown,yetDiabolusthoughtnotfittolethimabideinhisformerlustreandglory,becausehewasaseeingman。Whereforehedarkenedhim,notonlybytakingfromhimhisofficeandpower,butbybuildingahighandstrongtower,justbetweenthesun’sreflectionsandthewindowsofmylord’spalace;bywhichmeanshishouseandall,andthewholeofhishabitation,weremadeasdarkasdarknessitself。Andthus,beingalienatedfromthelight,hebecameasonethatwasbornblind。Tothis,hishouse,mylordwasconfinedastoaprison;normighthe,uponhisparole,gofartherthanwithinhisownbounds。Andnow,hadhehadahearttodoforMansoul,whatcouldhedoforit,orwhereincouldhebeprofitabletoher?Sothen,solongasMansoulwasunderthepowerandgovernmentofDiabolus,(andsolongitwasunderhim,asitwasobedienttohim,whichwasevenuntilbyawaritwasrescuedoutofhishand,)solongmyLordMayorwasratheranimpedimentin,thananadvantagetothefamoustownofMansoul。
AsforMr。Recorder,beforethetownwastaken,hewasamanwellreadinthelawsofhisking,andalsoamanofcourageandfaithfulnesstospeaktruthateveryoccasion;andhehadatongueasbravelyhungashehadaheadfilledwithjudgment。Now,thismanDiaboluscouldbynomeansabide,because,thoughhegavehisconsenttohiscomingintothetown,yethecouldnot,byallthewiles,trials,stratagems,anddevicesthathecoulduse,makehimwhollyhisown。
True,hewasmuchdegeneratedfromhisformerking,andalsomuchpleasedwithmanyofthegiant’slawsandservice;butallthiswouldnotdo,forasmuchashewasnotwhollyhis。
HewouldnowandthenthinkuponShaddai,andhavedreadofhislawuponhim,andthenhewouldspeakagainstDiaboluswithavoiceasgreataswhenalionroareth。Yea,andwouldalsoatcertaintimes,whenhisfitswereuponhim,(foryoumustknowthatsometimeshehadterriblefits,)makethewholetownofMansoulshakewithhisvoice:andthereforethenowkingofMansoulcouldnotabidehim。
Diabolus,therefore,fearedtheRecordermorethananythatwasleftaliveinthetownofMansoul,because,asIsaid,hiswordsdidshakethewholetown;theywereliketherattlingthunder,andalsolikethunder—claps。Since,therefore,thegiantcouldnotmakehimwhollyhisown,whatdothhedobutstudiesallthathecouldtodebauchtheoldgentleman,andbydebaucherytostupefyhismind,andmorehardenhisheartinthewaysofvanity。Andasheattempted,soheaccomplishedhisdesign:hedebauchedtheman,andbylittleandlittlesodrewhimintosinandwickedness,thatatlasthewasnotonlydebauched,asatfirst,andsobyconsequencedefiled,butwasalmost(atlast,Isay)pastallconscienceofsin。AndthiswasthefarthestDiaboluscouldgo。Whereforehebethinkshimofanotherproject,andthatwas,topersuadethemenofthetownthatMr。Recorderwasmad,andsonottoberegarded。Andforthisheurgedhisfits,andsaid,’Ifhebehimself,whydothhenotdothusalways?But,’quothhe,’asallmadfolkshavetheirfits,andinthemtheirravinglanguage,sohaththisoldanddoatinggentleman。’
Thus,byonemeansoranother,hequicklygotMansoultoslight,neglect,anddespisewhateverMr。Recordercouldsay。
For,besideswhatalreadyyouhaveheard,Diabolushadawaytomaketheoldgentleman,whenhewasmerry,unsayanddenywhatheinhisfitshadaffirmed。And,indeed,thiswasthenextwaytomakehimselfridiculous,andtocausethatnomanshouldregardhim。AlsonowheneverspakefreelyforKingShaddai,butalsobyforceandconstraint。Besides,hewouldatonetimebehotagainstthatatwhich,atanother,hewouldholdhispeace;sounevenwashenowinhisdoings。
Sometimeshewouldbeasiffastasleep,andagainsometimesasdead,eventhenwhenthewholetownofMansoulwasinhercareeraftervanity,andinherdanceafterthegiant’spipe。
Wherefore,sometimeswhenMansouldidusetobefrightedwiththethunderingvoiceoftheRecorderthatwas,andwhentheydidtellDiabolusofit,hewouldanswer,thatwhattheoldgentlemansaidwasneitheroflovetohimnorpitytothem,butofafoolishfondnessthathehadtobeprating;andsowouldhush,still,andputalltoquietagain。Andthathemightleavenoargumentunurgedthatmighttendtomakethemsecure,hesaid,andsaiditoften,’OMansoul!considerthat,notwithstandingtheoldgentleman’srage,andtherattleofhishighandthunderingwords,youhearnothingofShaddaihimself;’when,liaranddeceiverthathewas,everyoutcryofMr。RecorderagainstthesinofMansoulwasthevoiceofGodinhimtothem。Buthegoeson,andsays,’YouseethathevaluesnotthelossnorrebellionofthetownofMansoul,norwillhetroublehimselfwithcallinghistowntoareckoningfortheirgivingthemselvestome。Heknowsthatthoughyouwerehis,nowyouarelawfullymine;so,leavingusonetoanother,henowhathshakenhishandsofus。
’Moreover,OMansoul!’quothhe,’considerhowIhaveservedyou,eventotheuttermostofmypower;andthatwiththebestthatIhave,couldget,orprocureforyouinalltheworld:besides,Idaresaythatthelawsandcustomsthatyounowareunder,andbywhichyoudohomagetome,doyieldyoumoresolaceandcontentthandidtheparadisethatatfirstyoupossessed。Yourlibertyalso,asyourselvesdoverywellknow,hasbeengreatlywidenedandenlargedbyme;whereasI
foundyouapenned—uppeople。Ihavenotlaidanyrestraintuponyou;youhavenolaw,statute,orjudgmentofminetofrightyou;Icallnoneofyoutoaccountforyourdoings,exceptthemadman—youknowwhoImean;Ihavegrantedyoutolive,eachmanlikeaprinceinhisown,evenwithaslittlecontrolfrommeasImyselfhavefromyou。’
AndthuswouldDiabolushushupandquietthetownofMansoul,whentheRecorderthatwas,didattimesmolestthem:yea,andwithsuchcursedorationsasthese,wouldsetthewholetowninarageandfuryagainsttheoldgentleman。
Yea,therascalcrewatsometimeswouldbefordestroyinghim。Theyhaveoftenwished,inmyhearing,thathehadlivedathousandmilesofffromthem:hiscompany,hiswords,yea,thesightofhim,andspeciallywhentheyrememberedhowinoldtimeshedidusetothreatenandcondemnthem,(forallhewasnowsodebauched,)didterrifyandafflictthemsore。
Butallwisheswerevain,forIdonotknowhow,unlessbythepowerofShaddai,andhiswisdom,hewaspreservedinbeingamongstthem。Besides,hishousewasasstrongasacastle,andstoodhardbyastrongholdofthetown:moreover,ifatanytimeanyofthecreworrabbleattemptedtomakehimaway,hecouldpullupthesluices,andletinsuchfloodsaswoulddrownallroundabouthim。
ButtoleaveMr。Recorder,andtocometomyLordWillbewill,anotherofthegentryofthefamoustownofMansoul。ThisWillbewillwasashigh—bornasanymaninMansoul,andwasasmuch,ifnotmore,afreeholderthanmanyofthemwere;
besides,ifIremembermytalearight,hehadsomeprivilegespeculiartohimselfinthefamoustownofMansoul。Now,togetherwiththese,hewasamanofgreatstrength,resolution,andcourage,norinhisoccasioncouldanyturnhimaway。ButIsay,whetherhewasproudofhisestate,privileges,strength,orwhat,(butsureitwasthroughprideofsomething,)hescornsnowtobeaslaveinMansoul;andthereforeresolvestobearofficeunderDiabolus,thathemight(suchanoneashewas)beapettyrulerandgovernorinMansoul。And,headstrongmanthathewas!thushebeganbetimes;forthisman,whenDiabolusdidmakehisorationatEar—gate,wasoneofthefirstthatwasforconsentingtohiswords,andforacceptinghiscounselatwholesome,andthatwasfortheopeningofthegate,andforlettinghimintothetown;whereforeDiabolushadakindnessforhim,andthereforehedesignedforhimaplace。Andperceivingthevalourandstoutnessoftheman,hecovetedtohavehimforoneofhisgreatones,toactanddoinmattersofthehighestconcern。
Sohesentforhim,andtalkedwithhimofthatsecretmatterthatlayinhisbreast,butthereneedednotmuchpersuasioninthecase。ForasatfirsthewaswillingthatDiabolusshouldbeletintothetown,sonowhewasaswillingtoservehimthere。Whenthetyrant,therefore,perceivedthewillingnessofmylordtoservehim,andthathismindstoodbendingthatway,heforthwithmadehimthecaptainofthecastle,governorofthewall,andkeeperofthegatesofMansoul:yea,therewasaclauseinhiscommission,thatnothingwithouthimshouldbedoneinallthetownofMansoul。Sothatnow,nexttoDiabolushimself,whobutmyLordWillbewillinallthetownofMansoul!norcouldanythingnowbedone,butathiswillandpleasure,throughoutthetownofMansoul。HehadalsooneMr。Mindforhisclerk,amantospeakoneverywaylikehismaster:forheandhislordwereinprincipleone,andinpracticenotfarasunder。AndnowwasMansoulbroughtundertopurpose,andmadetofulfilthelustsofthewill,andofthemind。

Therewasnonelikehimtotrumpetaboutthestreetsthebravenature,thewiseconduct,andgreatgloryofthekingDiabolus。HewouldrangeandrovethroughoutallthestreetsofMansoultocryuphisillustriouslord,andwouldmakehimselfevenasanabject,amongthebaseandrascalcrew,tocryuphisvaliantprince。AndIsay,whenandwheresoeverhefoundthesevassals,hewouldevenmakehimselfasoneofthem。Inallillcourseshewouldactwithoutbidding,anddomischiefwithoutcommandment。
TheLordWillbewillalsohadadeputyunderhim,andhisnamewasMr。Affection,onethatwasalsogreatlydebauchedinhisprinciples,andanswerabletheretoinhislife:hewaswhollygiventotheflesh,andthereforetheycalledhimVile—
Affection。NowtherewasheandoneCarnal—Lust,thedaughterofMr。Mind,(liketolike,)thatfellinlove,andmadeamatch,andweremarried;and,asItakeit,theyhadseveralchildren,asImpudent,Blackmouth,andHate—Reproof。
Thesethreewereblackboys。Andbesidesthesetheyhadthreedaughters,asScorn—TruthandSlight—God,andthenameoftheyoungestwasRevenge。Thesewereallmarriedinthetown,andalsobegotandyieldedmanybadbrats,toomanytobehereinserted。Buttopassbythis。
WhenthegianthadthusengarrisonedhimselfinthetownofMansoul,andhadputdownandsetupwhomhethoughtgood,hebetakeshimselftodefacing。Nowtherewasinthemarket—
placeinMansoul,andalsouponthegatesofthecastle,animageoftheblessedKingShaddai。Thisimagewassoexactlyengraven,(anditwasengraveningold,)thatitdidthemostresembleShaddaihimselfofanythingthatthenwasextantintheworld。Thishebaselycommandedtobedefaced,anditwasasbaselydonebythehandofMr。No—Truth。Nowyoumustknowthat,asDiabolushadcommanded,andthatbythehandofMr。No—Truth,theimageofShaddaiwasdefaced,helikewisegaveorderthatthesameMr。No—TruthshouldsetupinitssteadthehorridandformidableimageofDiabolus,tothegreatcontemptoftheformerKing,anddebasingofhistownofMansoul。
Moreover,DiabolusmadehavocofallremainsofthelawsandstatutesofShaddaithatcouldbefoundinthetownofMansoul;towit,suchascontainedeitherthedoctrinesofmorals,withallcivilandnaturaldocuments。Alsorelativeseveritieshesoughttoextinguish。Tobeshort,therewasnothingoftheremainsofgoodinMansoulwhichheandWillbewillsoughtnottodestroy;fortheirdesignwastoturnMansoulintoabrute,andtomakeitliketothesensualsow,bythehandofMr。No—Truth。
Whenhehaddestroyedwhatlawandgoodordershecould,thenfurthertoeffecthisdesign,namely,toalienateMansoulfromShaddaiherKing,hecommands,andtheysetuphisownvainedicts,statutes,andcommandments,inallplacesofresortorconcourseinMansoul,towit,suchasgavelibertytothelustsoftheflesh,thelustsoftheeyes,andtheprideoflife,whicharenotofShaddai,butoftheworld。
Heencouraged,countenanced,andpromotedlasciviousness,andallungodlinessthere。Yea,muchmoredidDiabolustoencouragewickednessinthetownofMansoul;hepromisedthempeace,content,joy,andbliss,indoinghiscommands,andthattheyshouldneverbecalledtoanaccountfortheirnotdoingthecontrary。Andletthisservetogiveatastetothemthatlovetoheartellofwhatisdonebeyondtheirknowledgeafaroffinothercountries。
NowMansoulbeingwhollyathisbeck,andbroughtwhollytohisbow,nothingwasheardorseenthereinbutthatwhichtendedtosetuphim。
Butnowhe,havingdisabledtheLordMayorandMr。RecorderfrombearingofofficeinMansoul,andseeingthatthetown,beforehecametoit,wasthemostancientofcorporationsintheworld,andfearing,ifhedidnotmaintaingreatness,theyatanytimeshouldobjectthathehaddonethemaninjury;therefore,Isay,(thattheymightseethathedidnotintendtolessentheirgrandeur,ortotakefromthemanyoftheiradvantageousthings,)hedidchooseforthemaLordMayorandaRecorderhimself,andsuchascontentedthemattheheart,andsuchalsoaspleasedhimwondrouswell。
ThenameoftheMayorthatwasofDiabolus’makingwastheLordLustings,amanthathadneithereyesnorears。Allthathedid,whetherasamanoranofficer,hediditnaturally,asdoththebeast。Andthatwhichmadehimyetthemoreignoble,thoughnottoMansoul,yettothemthatbeheldandweregrievedforitsruin,was,thathenevercouldfavourgood,butevil。
TheRecorderwasonewhosenamewasForget—Good,andaverysorryfellowhewas。Hecouldremembernothingbutmischief,andtodoitwithdelight。Hewasnaturallypronetodothingsthatwerehurtful,evenhurtfultothetownofMansoul,andtoallthedwellersthere。Thesetwo,therefore,bytheirpowerandpractice,examples,andsmilesuponevil,didmuchmoregrammarandsettlethecommonpeopleinhurtfulways。Forwhodothnotperceivethatwhenthosethatsitaloftarevileandcorruptthemselves,theycorruptthewholeregionandcountrywheretheyare?
Besidesthese,DiabolusmadeseveralburgessesandaldermeninMansoul,suchasoutofwhomthetown,whenitneeded,mightchoosethemofficers,governors,andmagistrates。Andthesearethenamesofthechiefofthem:Mr。Incredulity,Mr。Haughty,Mr。Swearing,Mr。Whoring,Mr。Hard—Heart,Mr。

Whenthegianthadthusfarproceededinhiswork,inthenextplace,hebetookhimtobuildsomestrongholdsinthetown,andhebuiltthreethatseemedtobeimpregnable。ThefirsthecalledtheHoldofDefiance,becauseitwasmadetocommandthewholetown,andtokeepitfromtheknowledgeofitsancientKing。ThesecondhecalledMidnightHold,becauseitwasbuiltonpurposetokeepMansoulfromthetrueknowledgeofitself。ThethirdwascalledSweet—SinHold,becausebythathefortifiedMansoulagainstalldesiresofgood。ThefirstoftheseholdsstoodclosebyEye—gate,that,asmuchmightbe,lightmightbedarkenedthere;thesecondwasbuilthardbytheoldcastle,totheendthatthatmightbemademoreblind,ifpossible;andthethirdstoodinthemarket—place。
HethatDiabolusmadegovernoroverthefirstofthesewasoneSpite—God,amostblasphemouswretch:hecamewiththewholerabbleofthemthatcameagainstMansoulatfirst,andwashimselfoneofthemselves。HethatwasmadethegovernorofMidnightHoldwasoneLove—no—Light;hewasalsoofthemthatcamefirstagainstthetown。AndhethatwasmadethegovernoroftheholdcalledSweet—SinHoldwasonewhosenamewasLove—Flesh:hewasalsoaverylewdfellow,butnotofthatcountrywheretheotherarebound。ThisfellowcouldfindmoresweetnesswhenhestoodsuckingofalustthanhedidinalltheparadiseofGod。
AndnowDiabolusthoughthimselfsafe。HehadtakenMansoul,hehadengarrisonedhimselftherein;hehadputdowntheoldofficers,andhadsetupnewones;hehaddefacedtheimageofShaddai,andhadsetuphisown;hehadspoiledtheoldlawbooks,andhadpromotedhisownvainlies;hehadmadehimnewmagistrates,andsetupnewaldermen;hehadbuildedhimnewholds,andhadmannedthemforhimself:andallthishedidtomakehimselfsecure,incasethegoodShaddai,orhisSon,shouldcometomakeanincursionuponhim。
Nowyoumaywellthink,thatlongbeforethistime,word,bysomeoneorother,couldnotbutbecarriedtothegoodKingShaddai,howhisMansoul,inthecontinentofUniverse,waslost;andthattherunagategiantDiabolus,onceoneofhisMajesty’sservants,had,inrebellionagainsttheKing,madesurethereofforhimself。Yea,tidingswerecarriedandbroughttotheKingthereof,andthattoaverycircumstance。
Atfirst,howDiaboluscameuponMansoul(theybeingasimplepeopleandinnocent)withcraft,subtlety,lies,andguile。

Nowthistidings—tellerdidnotdeliverhisrelationofthingsinprivate,butinopencourt,theKingandhisSon,highlords,chiefcaptains,andnobles,beingalltherepresenttohear。Butbythattheyhadheardthewholeofthestory,itwouldhaveamazedonetohaveseen,hadhebeentheretobeholdit,whatsorrowandgrief,andcompunctionofspirit,therewasamongallsorts,tothinkthatfamousMansoulwasnowtaken:onlytheKingandhisSonforesawallthislongbefore,yea,andsufficientlyprovidedforthereliefofMansoul,thoughtheytoldnoteverybodythereof。
YetbecausetheyalsowouldhaveashareincondolingoftheMiseryofMansoul,thereforetheyalsodid,andthatatarateofthehighestdegree,bewailthelosingofMansoul。
TheKingsaidplainlythatitgrievedhimattheheart,andyoumaybesurethathisSonwasnotawhitbehindhim。ThusgavetheyconvictiontoallaboutthemthattheyhadloveandcompassionforthefamoustownofMansoul。Well,whentheKingandhisSonwereretiredintotheprivychamber,theretheyagainconsultedaboutwhattheyhaddesignedbefore,towit,thatasMansoulshouldintimebesufferedtobelost,soascertainlyitshouldberecoveredagain;recovered,I
say,insuchaway,asthatboththeKingandhisSonwouldgetthemselveseternalfameandglorythereby。Wherefore,afterthisconsult,theSonofShaddai(asweetandcomelyPerson,andonethathadalwaysgreataffectionforthosethatwereinaffliction,butonethathadmortalenmityinhisheartagainstDiabolus,becausehewasdesignedforit,andbecausehesoughthiscrownanddignity)—thisSonofShaddai,Isay,havingstrickenhandswithhisFatherandpromisedthathewouldbehisservanttorecoverhisMansoulagain,stoodbyhisresolution,norwouldherepentofthesame。Thepurportofwhichagreementwasthis:towit,thatatacertaintime,prefixedbyboth,theKing’sSonshouldtakeajourneyintothecountryofUniverse,andthere,inawayofjusticeandequity,bymakingamendsforthefolliesofMansoul,heshouldlayafoundationofperfectdeliverancefromDiabolusandfromhistyranny。

’Letallmenknowwhoareconcerned,thattheSonofShaddai,thegreatKing,isengagedbycovenanttohisFathertobringhisMansoultohimagain;yea,andtoputMansoul,too,throughthepowerofhismatchlesslove,intoafarbetterandmorehappyconditionthanitwasinbeforeitwastakenbyDiabolus。’
Thesepapers,therefore,werepublishedinseveralplaces,tothenolittlemolestationofthetyrantDiabolus;’fornow,’

Butwhenthismatter,ImeanthispurposeoftheKingandhisSon,didatfirsttakeairatcourt,whocantellhowthehighlords,chiefcaptains,andnobleprincesthatwerethere,weretakenwiththebusiness!First,theywhispereditonetoanother,andafterthatitbegantoringoutthroughtheKing’spalace,allwonderingatthegloriousdesignthatbetweentheKingandhisSonwasonfootforthemiserabletownofMansoul。Yea,thecourtierscouldscarcedoanythingeitherfortheKingorkingdom,buttheywouldmix,withthedoingthereof,anoiseoftheloveoftheKingandhisSon,thattheyhadforthetownofMansoul。
Norcouldtheselords,highcaptains,andprincesbecontenttokeepthisnewsatcourt;yea,beforetherecordsthereofwereperfected,themselvescamedownandtolditinUniverse。
Atlastitcametotheears,asIsaid,ofDiabolus,tohisnolittlediscontent;foryoumustthinkitwouldperplexhimtohearofsuchadesignagainsthim。Well,butafterafewcastsinhismind,heconcludeduponthesefourthings。
