  sothebandseparatedintopartiesoftwosandthrees,whichwerealltomeetagaininatangleddellthatlayneartoNottinghamTown。Then,whentheyhadallgatheredtogetherattheplaceofmeeting,Robinspoketothemthus:

  Inthemidstofalltheguard,inacart,withahalterabouthisneck,rodeWillStutely。Hisfacewaspalewithhiswoundandwithlossofblood,likethemooninbroaddaylight,andhisfairhairwasclottedinpointsuponhisforehead,wherethebloodhadhardened。

  Thenwhenhesawtheslantingsunlightlyingonfieldandfallow,shiningredlyhereandthereoncotandfarmhouse,andwhenheheardthesweetbirdssingingtheirvespers,andthesheepbleatinguponthehillside,andbeheldtheswallowsflyinginthebrightair,therecameagreatfullnesstohisheartsothatallthingsblurredtohissightthroughsalttears,andhebowedhisheadlestthefolkshouldthinkhimunmanlywhentheysawthetearsinhiseyes。
