  Irecallphasesofdeepspeculation,doubtsandevenprayersbynight,andstrangeoccasionswhenbyasortofhypnoticcontemplationofnothingnessIsoughttopiercethewebofappearancesaboutme。Itishardtomeasurethesethingsinrecedingperspective,andnowIcannottrace,socloselyhasmoodsucceededandoverlaidandobliteratedmood,thephasesbywhichanutterhorrorofdeathwasreplacedbythegrowingrealisationofitsnecessityanddignity。Difficultyoftheimaginationwithinfinitespace,infinitetime,entangledmymind;andmoraldistressforthepainandsufferingofbygoneagesthatmadeallthoughtofreformationinthefutureseembutthegrimmestironyuponnowirreparablewrongs。Manyanintricateperplexityofthesebroadeningyearsdidnotsomuchgetsettledasceasetomatter。

  Wecouldinfactcreateanewliberaleducationinthisway,andcuttheumbilicusoftheclassicallanguagesforgoodandall。Ishouldhavesetthisgoing,andtrustedittocorrectorkilltheoldpublicschoolsandtheOxfordandCambridgetraditionaltogether。I

  Soitiswithyoungpeople;somewillbegintheirreligious,theirsocial,theirsexualinterestsatfourteen,somenotuntilfaroninthetwenties。BrittenandIbelongedtooneoftheprecocioustypes,andCossingtonveryprobablytoanother。Itwasn'tthattherewasanythingpriggishaboutanyofus;weshouldhavebeenprigstohaveconcealedourspontaneousinterestsandapethetheoreticalboy。
  TheworldofmancentredformyimaginationinLondon,itstillcentresthere;therealandpresentworld,thatistosay,asdistinguishedfromthewonder-landsofatomicandmicroscopicscienceandthestarsandfuturetime。Ihadtravelledscarcelyatall,IhadnevercrossedtheChannel,butIhadreadcopiouslyandI

  Wehadnoconceptionofthequalityofpolitics,norhow"interests"
  cameintosuchaffairs;webelievedmenwereswayedbypurelyintellectualconvictionsandwereeitherrightorwrong,honestordishonestinwhicheasetheydeservedtobeshot,goodorbad。Weknewnothingofmentalinertia,andcouldimaginetheopinionofawholenationchangedbyonelucidandconvincingexposition。Wewerecapableofthemostincongruoustransfersfromthescrollofhistorytoourowntimes,wecouldsupposeBrixtonravagedandHampsteadburntincivilwarsforthesuccessiontothethrone,orCheapsidealaneofdeathandthefrontoftheMansionHousesetaboutwithguillotinesinthecourseofanaccuratelytransposedFrenchRevolution。WerebuiltLondonbyActofParliament,andonceinamoodofhygienicenterprisewetransferreditspopulationEN
  MASSEtotheNorthDownsbyanorderoftheLocalGovernmentBoard。
