  Thatcareerhaditsownhiddenside,ofcourse;butwhenIwriteoftheseunseenfactorsIdonotmeanthatbutsomethingaltogetherbroader。Idonotmeantheeverydaypettinesseswhichgavethecynicalobserverscopeandtoldofanarrower,baseraspectofthefairbutlimitedambitionsofmyostensibleself。This"sub-
  careerist"elementnotedlittlethingsthataffectedthecareer,mademesuspiciousoftherivalryofso-and-so,propitiatorytoso-
  and-so,whom,asamatteroffact,Ididn'trespectorfeelintheleastsympathetictowards;guardedwiththatman,whoforallhischarmandinterestwasn'thelpful,andalittletouchyattheappearanceofneglectfromthat。No,ImeansomethinggreaterandnotsomethingsmallerwhenIwriteofahiddenlife。
  IntheostensibleselfwhoglowedundertheapprobationofAltioraBailey,andwasenviedanddiscussed,praisedanddepreciated,intheHouseandinsmoking-roomgossip,youreallyhaveasmuchofamanasusuallyfiguresinanoveloranobituarynotice。ButIamtremendouslyimpressednowintheretrospectbytherealisationofhowlittlethatfrontagerepresentedme,andjusthowlittlesuchfrontagesdorepresentthecomplexitiesoftheintelligentcontemporary。Behindit,yetstrugglingtodisorganiseandalterit,altogether,wasafarmoreessentialreality,aselflesspersonal,lessindividualised,andbroaderinitsreferences。Itsaimswereneversimplytogeton;ithadanaltogetherdifferentsystemofdemandsandsatisfactions。Itwascritical,curious,morethanalittleunfeeling——andrelentlesslyilluminating。
  Itisjusttheexistenceanddevelopmentofthismoregeneralisedself-behind-the-frontagethatismakingmodernlifesomuchmoresubtleandintricatetorender,andsomuchmorehopefulinitsrelationstotheperplexitiesoftheuniverse。Iseethismentalandspiritualhinterlandvaryenormouslyinthepeopleaboutme,fromatypewhichseemstokeep,aspeoplesay,allitsgoodsinthewindow,tootherswho,likemyself,cometoregardtheostensibleexistencemoreandmoreasamereexperimentalfeederandagentforthatgreaterpersonalitybehind。Andthisback-selfhasitshistoryofphases,itscrisesandhappyaccidentsandirrevocableconclusions,moreorlessdistinctfromtheadventuresandachievementsoftheostensibleself。Itmeetspersonsandphrases,itassimilatesthespiritofabook,itisstartledintonewrealisationsbysomeaccidentthatseemsaltogetherirrelevanttothegeneraltenorofone'slife。Itsincreasingindependenceoftheostensiblecareermakesittheorganofcorrectivecriticism;itaccumulatesdisturbingenergy。Thenitbreaksourovertpromisesandrepudiatesourpledges,comingdownatlastlikeanoverbearingmentoruponthesmallengagementsofthepupil。
  Inthelifeoftheindividualittakestherolethatthegrowthofphilosophy,science,andcreativeliteraturemayplayinthedevelopmentofmankind。
