  Atfiveo'clockFreckleslaystretchedontheoperating-tableofLakeViewHospital,whilethreeofthegreatestsurgeonsinChicagobentoverhim。Attheircommand,McLeanpickeduptheunwillingAngelandcarriedhertothenursestobebathed,haveherbruisesattended,andtobeputtobed。
  Inaplacewhereitisdifficulttosurprisepeople,theywereastonishedwomenastheyremovedtheAngel'sdaintystainedandtornclothing,drewoffhosemuck-bakedtoherlimbs,soakedthedriedloamfromhersilkenhair,andwashedthebeautifulscratched,bruised,dirt-coveredbody。TheAngelfellfastasleeplongbeforetheyhadfinished,andlaydeeplyunconscious,whilethefightforFreckles'lifewasbeingwaged。

  WhereinFrecklesFindsHisBirthrightandtheAngelLosesHerHeartThenurselefttheroomquietly,astheAngelentered,carryingthebundleandpicture。Whentheywerealone,sheturnedtoFrecklesandsawthatthecrisiswasindeedathand。
  Thatshehadgoodwordtogivehimwashissalvation,fordespitetheheavyplasterjacketthatheldhisbodyimmovable,hisheadwasliftedfromthepillow。Botharmsreachedforher。Hislipsandcheeksflamed,whilehiseyesflashedwithexcitement。
  "Angel,"hepanted。"OhAngel!Didyoufindthem?Aretheywhite?
