  Aforeman-representativeofthedustcontractors,purchasersoftheMounds,hadwornMrWeggdowntoskinandbone。Thissupervisoroftheproceedings,assertinghisemployers'rightstocartoffbydaylight,nightlight,torchlight,whentheywould,musthavebeenthedeathofSilasiftheworkhadlastedmuchlonger。
  Seemingnevertoneedsleephimself,hewouldreappear,withatied-upbrokenhead,infantailhatandvelveteensmalls,likeanaccursedgoblin,atthemostunholyanduntimelyhours。Tiredoutbykeepingclosewardoveralongday'sworkinfogandrain,Silaswouldhavejustcrawledtobedandbedozing,whenahorridshakeandrumbleunderhispillowwouldannounceanapproachingtrainofcarts,escortedbythisDemonofUnrest,tofalltoworkagain。Atanothertime,hewouldberumbledupoutofhissoundestsleep,inthedeadofthenight;atanother,wouldbekeptathisposteight-and-fortyhoursonend。Themorehispersecutorbesoughthimnottotroublehimselftoturnout,themoresuspiciouswasthecraftyWeggthatindicationshadbeenobservedofsomethinghiddensomewhere,andthatattemptswereonfoottocircumventhim。Socontinuallybrokenwashisrestthroughthesemeans,thatheledthelifeofhavingwageredtokeeptenthousanddog-watchesintenthousandhours,andlookedpiteouslyuponhimselfasalwaysgettingupandyetnevergoingtobed。Sogauntandhaggardhadhegrownatlast,thathiswoodenlegshoweddisproportionate,andpresentedathrivingappearanceincontrastwiththerestofhisplaguedbody,whichmightalmosthavebeentermedchubby。
  However,Wegg'scomfortwas,thatallhisdisagreeableswerenowover,andthathewasimmediatelycomingintohisproperty。Oflate,thegrindstonedidundoubtedlyappeartohavebeenwhirlingathisownnoseratherthanBoffin's,butBoffin'snosewasnowtobesharpenedfine。Thusfar,MrWegghadlethisdustyfriendofflightly,havingbeenbaulkedinthatamiabledesignoffrequentlydiningwithhim,bythemachinationsofthesleeplessdustman。HehadbeenconstrainedtodeputeMrVenustokeeptheirdustyfriend,Boffin,underinspection,whilehehimselfturnedlankandleanattheBower。

  HowBradleyHeadstonehadbeenrackedandriveninhismindsincethequieteveningwhenbytheriver-sidehehadrisen,asitwere,outoftheashesoftheBargeman,nonebuthecouldhavetold。Notevenhecouldhavetold,forsuchmiserycanonlybefelt。
  First,hehadtobearthecombinedweightoftheknowledgeofwhathehaddone,ofthathauntingreproachthathemighthavedoneitsomuchbetter,andofthedreadofdiscovery。Thiswasloadenoughtocrushhim,andhelabouredunderitdayandnight。
