  WhentheLadyScheherazadehadproceededthusfar,relatesthe“Isitsoornot。”thekingturnedoverfromhisleftsidetohisright,andsaid:

  “Iwill。”saidthequeen。“’Thebeast,’continuedSinbadtothecaliph,’swam,asIhaverelated,uphillanddownhilluntil,atlength,wearrivedatanisland,manyhundredsofmilesincircumference,butwhich,nevertheless,hadbeenbuiltinthemiddleoftheseabyacolonyoflittlethingslikecaterpillars’“{*1}

  Weshoutedwithallourmight,inthehopeoffrighteningthebirdintolettinggoofitsprey,butitmerelygaveasnortorpuff,asifofrageandthenletfalluponourheadsaheavysackwhichprovedtobefilledwithsand!’“
