Onerushedupandhamstrungthebeast,whilestillstanding,byablowwithanaxeSomeBanyaielephant-huntershappenedtobepresentwhenmymenwerefightingwithhimOneofthemtookouthissnuff-box,andpouredoutallitscontentsattherootofatreeasanofferingtotheBarimoforsuccessAssoonastheanimalfell,thewholeofmypartyengagedinawild,savagedanceroundthebody,whichquitefrightenedtheBanyai,andhewhomadetheofferingsaidtome,“Iseeyouaretravelingwithpeoplewhodon’tknowhowtopray:

Theblackpossessesamoresavagenature,and,liketheill-naturedingeneral,isneverfoundwithanounceoffatinitsbody。
Fromitsgreaterfiercenessandwariness,itholdsitsplaceinadistrictmuchlongerthanitsmoretimidandbetter-conditionedneighbor。

Ifind,however,thatDrSmith,thebestjudgeinthesematters,isquitedecidedastotheproprietyofthesubdivisionintothreeorfourspeciesForcommonreaders,itissufficienttorememberthattherearetwowell-definedspecies,thatdifferentirelyinappearanceandfoodTheabsenceofboththeserhinocerosesamongthereticulatedriversinthecentralvalleymayeasilybeaccountedfor,theywouldbesuchaneasypreytothenativesintheircanoesattheperiodsofinundation;butonecannotsoreadilyaccountforthetotalabsenceofthegiraffeandostrichonthehighopenlandsoftheBatoka,northoftheZambesi,unlesswegivecredencetothenativereportwhichboundsthecountrystillfarthernorthbyanothernetworkofwatersnearLakeShuia,andsupposethatitalsopreventedtheirprogresssouthward。
TheBatokahavenonameforthegiraffeortheostrichintheirlanguage;
yet,astheformerexistsinconsiderablenumbersintheangleformedbytheLeeambyeandChobe,theymayhavecomefromthenorthalongthewesternridgeTheChobewouldseemtohavebeentoonarrowtoactasanobstacletothegiraffe,supposingittohavecomeintothatdistrictfromthesouth;butthebroadriverintowhichthatstreamflowsseemsalwaystohavepresentedanimpassablebarriertoboththegiraffeandtheostrich,thoughtheyaboundonitssouthernborder,bothintheKalahariDesertandthecountryofMashona。
