  Thetendershootsoftheevergreentreesonthesouthsidebecomeasifscorched;theleavesofmanioc,pumpkins,andothertenderplantsarekilled;whilethesamekinds,inspotsshelteredbyforests,continuegreenthroughthewholeyearAlltheinteriorofSouthAfricahasadistinctwinterofcold,varyinginintensitywiththelatitudes。
