Herewemaypauseforamomenttonoteoneofthechiefdifferencesbetweenscientificandtheologicalreasoningconsideredinthemselves。Kepler’smainreasoningastotheexistenceofalawforcometarymovementwasright;buthissecondaryreasoning,thatcometsmovenearlyinstraightlines,waswrong。HisrightreasoningwasdevelopedbyGassendiinFrance,byBorelliinItaly,byHevelandDoerfelinGermany,byEysatandBernouilliinSwitzerland,byPercyand——mostimportantofall,asregardsmathematicaldemonstration——byNewtoninEngland。Thegeneraltheory,whichwastrue,theyacceptedanddeveloped;thesecondarytheory,whichwasfounduntrue,theyrejected;and,asaresult,bothofwhattheythusacceptedandofwhattheyrejected,wasevolvedthebasisofthewholemoderncometarytheory。
Verydifferentwasthisfromthetheologicalmethod。Asarule,whentherearisesathinkerasgreatintheologyasKeplerinscience,thewholemassofhisconclusionsripensintoadogma。
