Thefirstgreatthinkerwho,inspiteofsomestumblingintotheologicpitfalls,perseveredinatrulyscientificpath,wasRogerBacon。Hislifeandworksseemuntilrecentlytohavebeengenerallymisunderstood:hewasformerlyrankedasasuperstitiousalchemistwhohappeneduponsomeinventions,butmorerecentinvestigationhasshownhimtobeoneofthegreatmastersintheevolutionofhumanthought。TheadvanceofsoundhistoricaljudgmentseemslikelytobringthefameofthetwowhobearthenameofBaconnearlytoequality。BaconofthechancellorshipandoftheNovumOrganummaynotwane,butBaconoftheprisoncellandtheOpusMajussteadilyapproacheshiminbrightness。
