Suchwasthestruggleofthephysicalsciencesingeneral。Letusnowlookbrieflyatonespecialexampleoutofmany,whichreveals,aswellasany,oneofthemaintheorieswhichpromptedtheologicalinterferencewiththem。
ItwilldoubtlessseemamazingtomanythatforagestheweightoftheologicalthoughtinChristendomwasthrownagainsttheideaofthesuffocatingpropertiesofcertaingases,andespeciallyofcarbonicacid。Althoughinantiquityweseemenformingarighttheoryofgasesinmines,wefindthat,earlyinthehistoryoftheChurch,St。ClementofAlexandriaputforththetheorythatthesegasesaremanifestationsofdiabolicaction,andthat,throughoutChristendom,suffocationincaverns,wells,andcellarswasattributedtothedirectactionofevilspirits。

Towardtheendofthefifteenthcenturytherehadcomeagreatgeniusladenwithimportanttruthsinchemistry,butforwhomtheworldwasnotready——BasilValentine。Hisdiscoveriesanticipatedmuchthathasbroughtfameandfortunetochemistssince,yetsofearfulofdangerwashethathisworkwascarefullyconcealed。Notuntilafterhisdeathwashistreatiseonalchemyfound,andeventhenitwasforalongtimenotknownwhereandwhenhelived。Thepapalbull,Spondentpariter,andthevariousprohibitionsitbred,forcingotheralchemiststoconcealtheirlaboratories,ledhimtolethimselfbeknownduringhislifeatErfurtsimplyasanapothecary,andtowaituntilafterhisdeathtomakearevelationoftruthwhichduringhislifetimemighthavecosthimdear。Amongthelegaciesofthisgreatestofthealchemistswasthedoctrinethattheairwhichasphyxiatesworkersinminesissimilartothatwhichisproducedbyfermentationofmalt,andarecommendationthat,inordertodriveawaytheevilandtopreventseriousaccidents,firesbelightedandjetsofsteamusedtoventilatethemines——stressbeingespeciallylaidupontheideathatthedangerintheminesisproducedby“exhalationsofmetals。”
