Butsuddenlycamesomethingmoremiraculous,apparently,thanallthesewonders。Withoutanyassignedcause,thisepidemicofpossessiondiminishedandthedevildisappeared。
Notlongafterthis,Prof。Tissot,aneminentmemberofthemedicalfacultyatDijon,visitedthespotandbeganaseriesofresearches,ofwhichheafterwardpublishedafullaccount。HetellsusthathefoundsomereasonsforthesuddendepartureofSatanwhichhadneverbeenpublished。HediscoveredthattheGovernmenthadquietlyremovedoneortwoveryzealousecclesiasticstoanotherparish,hadsentthepolicetoMorzinetomaintainorder,andhadgiveninstructionsthatthosewhoactedoutrageouslyshouldbesimplytreatedaslunaticsandsenttoasylums。Thispolicy,soaccordantwithFrenchmethodsofadministration,castoutthedevil:thepossessedweremainlycured,andthematterappearedended。
