  IthasbeentheoccasionaloccupationoftheAuthorofWaverleyforseveralyearspasttoreviseandcorrectthevoluminousseriesofNovelswhichpassunderthatname,inorderthat,iftheyshouldeverappearashisavowedproductions,hemightrendertheminsomedegreedeservingofacontinuanceofthepublicfavourwithwhichtheyhavebeenhonouredeversincetheirfirstappearance。Foralongperiod,however,itseemedlikelythattheimprovedandillustratededitionwhichhemeditatedwouldbeaposthumouspublication。
  ButthecourseoftheeventswhichoccasionedthedisclosureoftheAuthor’snamehavinginagreatmeasurerestoredtohimasortofparentalcontrolovertheseWorks,heisnaturallyinducedtogivethemtothepressinacorrected,and,hehopes,animprovedform,whilelifeandhealthpermitthetaskofrevisingandillustratingthem。Suchbeinghispurpose,itisnecessarytosayafewwordsontheplanoftheproposedEdition。

  Butwithoutalteringintheslightestdegreeeitherthestoryorthemodeoftellingit,theAuthorhastakenthisopportunitytocorrecterrorsofthepressandslipsofthepen。Thatsuchshouldexistcannotbewonderedat,whenitisconsideredthatthePublishersfoundittheirinteresttohurrythroughthepressasuccessionoftheearlyeditionsofthevariousNovels,andthattheAuthorhadnottheusualopportunityofrevision。Itishopedthatthepresenteditionwillbefoundfreefromerrorsofthataccidentalkind。
