  Inconsequenceoftheselettersofthepope,theEmperorofGermany,FredericII,alsopronouncedhisbanagainstthem。TheBishopsofRatzebourg,Lubeck,Osnabruek,Munster,andMindentookuparmstoexterminatethem,aidedbytheDukeofBrabant,theCountsofHolland,ofCloves,oftheMark,ofOldenburg,ofEgmond,ofDiest,andmanyotherpowerfulnobles。Anarmyoffortythousandmenwassooncollected,whichmarched,underthecommandoftheDukeofBrabant,intothecountryoftheStedinger。Thelattermusteredvigorouslyindefenceoftheirlivesandliberties,butcouldraisenogreaterforce,includingeverymancapableofbearingarms,thaneleventhousandmentocopeagainsttheoverwhelmingnumbersoftheirfoe。
  Theyfoughtwiththeenergyofdespair,butallinvain。Eightthousandofthemwereslainonthefieldofbattle;thewholeracewasexterminated;andtheenragedconquerorsscouredthecountryinalldirections——slewthewomenandchildrenandoldmen——droveawaythecattle——firedthewoodsandcottages,andmadeatotalwasteoftheland。
