“These,Sire,arethemotivesuponwhichyourParliamentofNormandyhasactedindecreeingthepunishmentofdeathagainstthepersonslatelybroughtbeforeitforthiscrime。Ifithashappenedthat,onanyoccasion,theseparliaments,andtheParliamentofNormandyamongtherest,havecondemnedtheguiltytoalesspunishmentthanthatofdeath,itwasforthereasonthattheirguiltwasnotofthedeepestdye;yourMajesty,andtheKingsyourpredecessors,havingleftfulllibertytothevarioustribunalstowhomtheydelegatedtheadministrationofjustice,todecreesuchpunishmentaswaswarrantedbytheevidencebroughtbeforethem。
“Aftersomanyauthorities,andpunishmentsordainedbyhumananddivinelaws,wehumblysupplicateyourMajestytoreflectoncemoreupontheextraordinaryresultswhichproceedfromthemalevolenceofthissortofpeople——onthedeathsfromunknowndiseases,whichareoftentheconsequencesoftheirmenaces——onthelossofthegoodsandchattelsofyoursubjects——ontheproofsofguiltcontinuallyaffordedbytheinsensibilityofthemarksupontheaccused——onthesuddentransportationofbodiesfromoneplacetoanother——onthesacrificesandnocturnalassemblies,andotherfacts,corroboratedbythetestimonyofancientandmodernauthors,andverifiedbysomanyeye-witnesses,composedpartlyofaccomplices,andpartlyofpeoplewhohadnointerestinthetrialsbeyondtheloveoftruth,andconfirmed,moreover,bytheconfessionsoftheaccusedpartiesthemselves;andthat,Sire,withsomuchagreementandconformitybetweenthedifferentcases,thatthemostignorantpersonsconvictedofthiscrimehavespokentothesamecircumstances,andinnearlythesamewords,asthemostcelebratedauthorswhohavewrittenaboutit,allofwhichmaybeeasilyprovedtoyourMajesty’ssatisfactionbytherecordsofvarioustrialsbeforeyourparliaments。
“These,Sire,aretruthssointimatelyboundupwiththeprinciplesofourreligion,that,extraordinaryalthoughtheybe,nopersonhasbeenabletothistimetocalltheminquestion。Ifsomehavecited,inoppositiontothesetruths,thepretendedcanonoftheCouncilofAncyre,andapassagefromSt。Augustin,inatreatiseuponthe’SpiritandtheSoul’,ithasbeenwithoutfoundation;anditwouldbeeasytoconvinceyourMajestythatneithertheonenortheotheroughttobeaccountedofanyauthority;and,besidesthat,thecanon,inthissense,wouldbecontrarytotheopinionofallsucceedingcouncilsofthechurch,CardinalBaronius,andalllearnedcommentators,agreethatitisnottobefoundinanyoldedition。Ineffect,inthoseeditionswhereinitisfound,itisinanotherlanguage,andisindirectcontradictiontothetwenty-thirdcanonofthesamecouncil,whichcondemnssorcery,accordingtoallprecedingconstitutions。EvensupposingthatthiscanonwasreallypromulgatedbytheCouncilofAncyre,wemustobservethatitwasissuedinthesecondcentury,whentheprincipalattentionoftheChurchwasdirectedtothedestructionofpaganism。Forthisreason,itcondemnsthatclassofwomenwhosaidtheycouldpassthroughtheair,andoverimmenseregions,withDianaandHerodias,andenjoinsallpreacherstoteachthefalsehoodofsuchanopinion,inordertodeterpeoplefromtheworshipofthesefalsedivinities;butitdoesnotquestionthepowerofthedeviloverthehumanbody,whichis,infact,provedbytheHolyGospelofJesusChristhimself。Andwithregard,Sire,tothepretendedpassageofSt。Augustin,everybodyknowsthatitwasnotwrittenbyhim,becausethewriter,whoeverhewas,citesBoetius,whodiedmorethaneightyyearsafterthetimeofSt。Augustin。Besides,thereisstillmoreconvincingproofinthefact,thatthesamefatherestablishesthetruthofwitchcraftinallhiswritings,andmoreparticularlyinhis’CityofGod;’andinhisfirstvolume,questionthe25th,whereinhestatesthatsorceryisacommunionbetweenmanandthedevil,whichallgoodChristiansoughttolookuponwithhorror。
“Takingallthesethingsintoconsideration,Sire,theofficersofyourParliamenthope,fromthejusticeofyourMajesty,thatyouwillbegraciouslypleasedtoreceivethehumbleremonstrancestheyhavetakenthelibertytomake。Theyarecompelled,fortheacquittaloftheirownconsciencesandindischargeoftheirduty,tomakeknowntoyourMajesty,thatthedecreestheypassedagainstthesorcerersandwitchesbroughtbeforethem,werepassedafteramaturedeliberationonthepartofallthejudgespresent,andthatnothinghasbeendonethereinwhichisnotconformabletotheuniversaljurisprudenceofthekingdom,andforthegeneralwelfareofyourMajesty’ssubjects,ofwhomthereisnotonewhocansaythatheissecurefromthemalevolenceofsuchcriminals。WethereforesupplicateyourMajestytosufferustocarryintoeffectthesentenceswepassed,andtoproceedwiththetrialoftheotherpersonsaccusedofthesamecrime;andthatthepietyofyourMajestywillnotsuffertobeintroducedduringyourreignanopinioncontrarytotheprinciplesofthatholyreligionforwhichyouhavealwaysemployedsogloriouslybothyourcaresandyourarms。“
Louis,aswehavealreadymentioned,paidnoattentiontothisappeal。Thelivesoftheoldwomenwerespared,andprosecutionsformerewitchcraft,unconnectedwithotheroffences,werediscontinuedthroughoutFrance。In1680anactwaspassedforthepunishment,notofwitches,butofpretenderstowitchcraft,fortune-tellers,divineresses,andpoisoners。
ThusthelightbrokeinuponGermany,France,England,andScotlandaboutthesametime,graduallygrowingclearerandclearertillthemiddleoftheeighteenthcentury,whenwitchcraftwasfinallyreckonedamongstexplodeddoctrines,andthebeliefinitconfinedtotheuttermostvulgar。Twice,however,didthemadnessburstforthagainasfurious,whileitlasted,aseverithadbeen。ThefirsttimeinSweden,in1669,andthesecondinGermany,solateas1749。Boththeseinstancesmeritparticularmention。Thefirstisoneofthemostextraordinaryuponrecord,andforatrocityandabsurdityisunsurpassedintheannalsofanynation。
IthavingbeenreportedtotheKingofSwedenthatthelittlevillageofMohra,intheprovinceofDalecarlia,wastroubledexceedinglywithwitches,heappointedacommissionofclergyandlaymentotracetherumourtoitssource,withfullpowerstopunishtheguilty。Onthe12thofAugust1669,thecommissionersarrivedinthebewitchedvillage,tothegreatjoyofthecredulousinhabitants。
Onthefollowingdaythewholepopulation,amountingtothreethousandpersons,assembledinthechurch。Asermonwaspreached,“declaringthemiserablecaseofthosepeoplethatsufferedthemselvestobedeludedbythedevil,“andferventprayerwasofferedupthatGodwouldremovethescourgefromamongthem。
Thewholeassemblythenadjournedtotherector’shouse,fillingallthestreetbeforeit,whentheKing’scommissionwasread,chargingeverypersonwhoknewanythingofthewitchery,tocomeforwardanddeclarethetruth。Apassionoftearsseizeduponthemultitude;men,women,andchildrenbegantoweepandsob,andallpromisedtodivulgewhattheyhadheardorknew。Inthisframeofmindtheyweredismissedtotheirhomes。Onthefollowingdaytheywereagaincalledtogether,whenthedepositionsofseveralpersonsweretakenpubliclybeforethemall。Theresultwasthatseventypersons,includingfifteenchildren,weretakenintocustody。NumbersalsowerearrestedintheneighbouringdistrictofElfdale。Beingputtothetorture,theyallconfessedtheirguilt。Theysaidtheyusedtogotoagravel-pitthatlayhardbythecross-way,wheretheyputavestupontheirheads,anddanced“roundandroundandroundabout。“Theythenwenttothecross-way,andcalledthreetimesuponthedevil;thefirsttimeinalowstillvoice;thesecond,somewhatlouder;andthethird,veryloudly,withthesewords,“Antecessor,come,andcarryustoBlockula!“Thisinvocationneverfailedtobringhimtotheirview。
Hegenerallyappearedasalittleoldman,inagreycoat,withredandbluestockings,withexceedinglylonggarters。Hehadbesidesaveryhigh-crownedhat,withbandsofmany-colouredlinenenfoldedaboutit,andalongredbeard,thathungdowntohismiddle。
Thefirstquestionheputtothemwas,whethertheywouldservehimsoulandbody?Ontheiransweringintheaffirmative,hetoldthemtomakereadyforthejourneytoBlockula。Itwasnecessarytoprocure,inthefirstplace,“somescrapingsofaltarsandfilingsofchurchclocks。“Antecessorthengavethemahorn,withsomesalveinit,wherewiththeyanointedthemselves。Thesepreparationsended,hebroughtbeastsforthemtorideupon,horses,asses,goats,andmonkeys;and,givingthemasaddle,ahammer,andanail,utteredthewordofcommand,andawaytheywent。Nothingstoppedthem。Theyflewoverchurches,highwalls,rocks,andmountains,untiltheycametothegreenmeadowwhereBlockulawassituated。Upontheseoccasionstheycarriedasmanychildrenwiththemastheycould;forthedevil,theysaid,“didplagueandwhipthemiftheydidnotprocurehimchildren,insomuchthattheyhadnopeaceorquietforhim。“
