SodesirouswasMontezumatoknowitscontents,thatcontrarytoallcustomhesnatchedtherollfromthehandsofthecounsellor,andunrollingit,hebegantoreadthepicturewritingbythebalefullightoftheblazingskyandtemple。
Presently,aswewatchedandheread,Montezumagroanedaloud,andcastingdownthewritinghecoveredhisfacewithhishands。
AsitchanceditfellneartowhereIstood,andIsawpaintedoveritrudepicturesofshipsoftheSpanishrig,andofmenintheSpanisharmour。
ThenIunderstoodwhyMontezumagroaned。
