  Atthebeginningofthefatalyear1839,whilemakingasuddendashupontheArabsduringaretreatbeforesuperiorforces,heflunghimselfagainsttheenemy,followedbyonlyasinglecompany,andfellin,unfortunately,withthemainbodyoftheenemy。Thebattlewasbloodyandterrible,mantoman,andonlyafewhorsemenescapedalive。Seeingthattheircolonelwassurrounded,thesemen,whowereatsomedistance,wereunwillingtoperishuselesslyinattemptingtorescuehim。Theyheardhiscry:“Yourcolonel!tome!acoloneloftheEmpire!“buttheyrejoinedtheregiment。Philippemetwithahorribledeath,fortheArabs,afterhackinghimtopieceswiththeirscimitars,cutoffhishead。
