Alas!almostthenextdaywasoneofthegreatfairsinthetown;andasseveralrowsandotherdisagreeableaccidentshadoflatetakenplaceontheseoccasions,theDoctorgivesout,afterprayersinthemorning,thatnoboyistogodownintothetown。WhereforeEastandTom,fornoearthlypleasureexceptthatofdoingwhattheyaretoldnottodo,startaway,aftersecondlesson,andmakingashortcircuitthroughthefields,strikeabacklanewhichleadsintothetown,godownit,andrunplumpupononeofthemastersastheyemergeintotheHighStreet。Themasterinquestion,thoughaveryclever,isnotarighteousman。Hehasalreadycaughtseveralofhisownpupils,andgivesthemlinestolearn,whilehesendsEastandTom,whoarenothispupils,uptotheDoctor,who,onlearningthattheyhadbeenatprayersinthemorning,flogsthemsoundly。
Thefloggingdidthemnogoodatthetime,fortheinjusticeoftheircaptorwasranklingintheirminds;butitwasjusttheendofthehalf,andonthenexteveningbutoneThomasknocksattheirdoor,andsaystheDoctorwantstoseethem。Theylookatoneanotherinsilentdismay。Whatcanitbenow?Whichoftheircountlesswrong-doingscanhehaveheardofofficially?
