  Theduketoretheenvelopeopen。Ashedidsosomethingfelloutofitontothewritingtable。Itlookedasthoughitwasalockofawoman’shair。Asheglancedatitthedukeseemedtobeatriflestartled。Thedukereadtheletter:
  “YourgracewillbesogoodastobringfivehundredpoundsingoldtothePiccadillyendoftheBurlingtonArcadewithinanhourofthereceiptofthis。TheDuchessofDatchethasbeenkidnaped。Animitationduchessgotintothecarriage,whichwaswaitingoutsideCaneandWilson’s,andshealightedontheroad。Unlessyourgracedoesasyouarerequested,theDuchessofDatchet’sleft-handlittlefingerwillbeatoncecutoff,andsenthomeintimetoreceivetheprincetodinner。Otherportionsofhergracewillfollow。Alockofhergrace’shairisinclosedwiththisasanearnestofourgoodintentions。
