  Fortheyhadsomanywaysoftalking,andoftuggingatmyhair,andofsittinguponmynecknoteventwowiththeirlegsalike,andtheyforcedmetojumpsovehemently,seemingtocourttheperilofmycomingdownneckandcropwiththem,andurgingmestilltogofaster,howeverfastImightgowiththem;Iassureyouthattheyweresometimessohardandtyrannicaloverme,thatImightalmostaswellhavebeenamongtheveryDoonesthemselves。
  Nevertheless,thewayinwhichthechildrenmademeusefulprovedalsoofsomeusetome;fortheirmothersweresopleasedbytheexertionsofthe’greatGee-gee’——asallthesmallonesentitledme——thattheygavemeunlimitedpowerandauthorityovertheirhusbands;moreover,theydidtheirutmostamongtheirrelativesroundabout,tofetchrecruitsforourlittleband。Andbysuchmeans,severaloftheyeomanryfromBarnstaple,andfromTiverton,wereaddedtoournumber;andinasmuchasthesewerearmedwithheavyswords,andshortcarabines,theirappearancewastrulyformidable。
