Toeverymanthefirstyearisthebeginningoflife,andthetimeofbirthoughttobewrittendowninthetemplesoftheirfathersasthebeginningofexistencetoeverychild,whetherboyorgirl。Leteveryphratriahaveinscribedonawhitedwallthenamesofthesuccessivearchonsbywhomtheyearsarereckoned。Andneartothemletthelivingmembersofthephratriabeinscribed,andwhentheydepartlifeletthembeerased。Thelimitofmarriageableagesforawomanshallbefromsixteentotwentyyearsatthelongest-foraman,fromthirtytothirty-fiveyears;andletawomanholdofficeatforty,andamanatthirtyyears。Letamangoouttowarfromtwentytosixtyyears,andforawoman,ifthereappearanyneedtomakeuseofherinmilitaryservice,letthetimeofservicebeaftersheshallhavebroughtforthchildrenuptofiftyyearsofage;andletregardbehadtowhatispossibleandsuitabletoeach。

Supposethatwecompelnurses,underpenaltyofalegalfine,tobealwayscarryingthechildrensomewhereorother,eithertothetemples,orintothecountry,ortotheirrelations,houses,untiltheyarewellabletostand,andtotakecarethattheirlimbsarenotdistortedbyleaningonthemwhentheyaretooyoung-theyshouldcontinuetocarrythemuntiltheinfanthascompleteditsthirdyear;thenursesshouldbestrong,andthereshouldbemorethanoneofthem。Shallthesebeourrules,andshallweimposeapenaltyfortheneglectofthem?No,no;thepenaltyofwhichwewerespeakingwillfalluponourownheadsmorethanenough。
