  Thathewashimselfawareoftheshortcomingsof“Sordello“asaworkofartisnotdisputable。In1863,Mrs。Orrsays,heconsideredtheadvisabilityof“rewritingitinamoretransparentmanner,butconcludedthatthelabourwouldbedisproportionatetotheresult,andcontentedhimselfwithsummarisingthecontentsofeach`book’inacontinuousheading,whichrepresentsthemainthreadofthestory。“
  TheessentialmanlinessofBrowningisevidentinthefamousdedicationtotheFrenchcriticMilsand,whowasamonghisearlyadmirers。
