  Inthecoldgraydawnthesisterslittheirlampandreadtheirchapterwithanearnestnessneverfeltbefore。Fornowtheshadowofarealtroublehadcome,thelittlebookswerefullofhelpandcomfort,andastheydressed,theyagreedtosaygoodbyecheerfullyandhopefully,andsendtheirmotheronheranxiousjourneyunsaddenedbytearsorcomplaintsfromthem。Everythingseemedverystrangewhentheywentdown,sodimandstilloutside,sofulloflightandbustlewithin。Breakfastatthatearlyhourseemedodd,andevenHannah’sfamiliarfacelookedunnaturalassheflewaboutherkitchenwithhernightcapon。Thebigtrunkstoodreadyinthehall,Mother’scloakandbonnetlayonthesofa,andMotherherselfsattryingtoeat,butlookingsopaleandwornwithsleeplessnessandanxietythatthegirlsfounditveryhardtokeeptheirresolution。Meg’seyeskeptfillinginspiteofherself,Jowasobligedtohideherfaceinthekitchenrollermorethanonce,antthelittlegirlsworeagrave,troubledexpression,asifsorrowwasanewexperiencetothem。

  “Now,nydearyoungladies,rememberwhatyourmasaid,anddon’tfret。Comeandhaveacupofcoffeeallround,andthenlet’sfalltoworkandbeacredittothefamily。“
  Coffeewasatreat,andHannahshowedgreattactinmakingitthatmorning。Noonecouldresistherpersuasivenods,orthefragrantinvitationissuingfromthenoseofthecoffeepot。Theydrewuptothetable,exchangedtheirhandkerchiefsfornapkins,andintenminuteswereallrightagain。
