  Mrs。Chester’sfairwassoveryelegantandselectthatitwasconsideredagreathonorbytheyoungladiesoftheneighborhoodtobeinvitedtotakeatable,andeveryonewasmuchinterestinthematter。Amywasasked,butJowasnot,whichwasfortunateforallparties,asherelbowsweredecidedlyakimboatthisperiodofherlife,andittookagoodmanyhardknockstoteachherhowtogetoneasily。The`haughty,uninterestingcreature’wasletseverelyalone,butAmy’stalentandtasteweredulycomplimentedbytheofferofthearttable,andsheexertedherselftoprepareandsecureappropriateandvaluablecontributionstoit。
  Everythingwentonsmoothlytillthedaybeforethefairopened,thenthereoccurredoneofthelittleskirmisheswhichitisalmostimpossibletoavoid,whensomefive-and-twentywomen,oldandyoung,withalltheirprivatepiquesandprejudices,trytoworktogether。
  MayChesterwasratherjealousofAmybecausethelatterwasagreaterfavoritethanherself,andjustatthistimeseveraltriflingcircumstancesoccurredtoincreasethefeeling。
  Amy’sdaintypen-and-inkworkentirelyeclipsedMay’spaintedvases——thatwasonethorn。ThentheallconqueringTudorhaddancedfourtimeswithAmyatalatepartyandonlyoncewithMay——thatwasthornnumbertwo。Butthechiefgrievancethatrankledinhersoul,andgaveanexcuseforherunfriendlyconduct,wasarumorwhichsomeobliginggossiphadwhisperedtoher,thattheMarchgirlshadmadefunofherattheLambs’。
