　　Ihavebeenhappy，however，inbelieving，fromthestiflingofthiseffort，thatthatdosewasfoundtoostrong，&excitedasmuchrepugnancethereasitdidhorrorinotherpartsofourcountry，&

　　Bethisasitmay，ineveryfree&deliberatingsocietytheremust，fromthenatureofman，beoppositeparties&violentdissensions&
　　discords；andoneofthese，forthemostpart，mustprevailovertheotherforalongerorshortertime。Perhapsthispartydivisionisnecessarytoinduceeachtowatch&delatetothepeopletheproceedingsoftheother。Butifonatemporarysuperiorityoftheoneparty，theotheristoresorttoascissionoftheUnion，nofederalgovernmentcaneverexist。IftoridourselvesofthepresentruleofMassachusets&ConnecticutwebreaktheUnion，willtheevilstopthere?SupposetheN。EnglandStatesalonecutoff，willournaturesbechanged?arewenotmenstilltothesouthofthat，&withallthepassionsofmen?ImmediatelyweshallseeaPennsylvania&aVirginiapartyariseintheresiduaryconfederacy，andthepublicmindwillbedistractedwiththesamepartyspirit。
