  Butatnightfallthewindarose,——atfirstasadistantmurmuralongthehillside,thatdiedawaybeforeitreachedtherockyledge;thenitrockedthetopsofthetallredwoodsbehindthemill,butleftthemillandthedriedleavesthatlayintheriver-
  bedundisturbed。Thenthemurmurwasprolonged,untilitbecamethecontinuoustroubleofsomefar-offsea,andatlastthewindpossessedtheledgeitself;drivingthesmokedownthestumpychimneyofthemill,rattlingthesun-warpedshinglesontheroof,stirringtheinsiderafterswithcoolbreaths,andsingingovertheroughprojectionsoftheoutsideeaves。Atnineo’clockherolledhimselfupinhisblanketsbeforethefire,aswashiswont,andfellasleep。
