vousareappointedforthenewmissions，andthelikecircum-
stancesofthepractice，Imaynotdoit，neitherisitmuchtoyourdesire。Butthusyouseewemaintainatrade，notforgold，silver，orjewels，norforsilks，norforspices，noranyothercommodityofmatter；butonlyforGod’sfirstcreature，whichwaslight；tohavelight，Isay，ofthegrowthofallpartsoftheworld。"
Andwhenhehadsaidthis，hewassilent，andsowereweall；forindeedwewereallastonishedtohearsostrangethingssoprobablytold。Andheperceivingthatwewerewillingtosaysomewhat，buthaditnotready，ingreatcourtesytookusoff，anddescendedtoaskusquestionsofourvoyageandfortunes，andintheendconcludedthatwemightdowelltothinkwithourselveswhattimeofstaywewoulddemandoftheState，andbadeusnottoscantourselves；forhewouldprocuresuchtimeaswedesired。Whereuponweallroseupandpre-
sentedourselvestokisstheskirtofhistippet，buthewouldnotsufferus，andsotookhisleave。ButwhenitcameonceamongourpeoplethattheStateusedtoofferconditionstostrangersthatwouldstay，wehadworkenoughtogetanyofourmentolooktoourship，andtokeepthemfromgoingpresentlytothegovernortocraveconditions；butwithmuchadowerestrainedthem，tillwemightagreewhatcoursetotake。
Wetookourselvesnowforfreemen，seeingtherewasnodangerofourutterperdition，andlivedmostjoyfully，goingabroadandseeingwhatwastobeseeninthecityandplacesadjacent，withinourtedder；andobtainingacquaintancewithmanyofthecity，notofthemeanestquality，atwhosehandswefoundsuchhumanity，andsuchafreedomanddesiretotakestrangers，asitwere，intotheirbosom，aswasenoughtomakeusforgetallthatwasdeartousinourowncountries，andcon-
tinuallywemetwithmanythings，rightworthyofobservationandrelation；asindeed，iftherebeamirrorintheworld，worthytoholdmen’seyes，itisthatcountry。Onedaythereweretwoofourcompanybiddentoafeastofthefamily，astheycallit；
amostnatural，pious，andreverendcustomitis，showingthatnationtobecompoundedofallgoodness。Thisisthemannerofit；itisgrantedtoanymanthatshalllivetoseethirtyper-
sonsdescendedofhisbody，alivetogether，andallabovethreeyearsold，tomakethisfeast，whichisdoneatthecostoftheState。Thefatherofthefamily，whomtheycallthetirsan，twodaysbeforethefeast，takethtohimthreeofsuchfriendsashelikethtochoose，andisassistedalsobythegovernorofthecityorplacewherethefeastiscelebrated；andalltheper-
sonsofthefamily，ofbothsexes，aresummonedtoattendhim。
Thesetwodaysthetirsansittethinconsultation，concerningthegoodestateofthefamily。There，iftherebeanydiscordorsuitsbetweenanyofthefamily，theyarecompoundedandappeased。There，ifanyofthefamilybedistressedordecayed，orderistakenfortheirrelief，andcompetentmeanstolive。
There，ifanybesubjecttovice，ortakeill-courses，theyarereprovedandcensured。So，likewise，directionisgiventouch-
ingmarriages，andthecoursesoflifewhichanyofthemshouldtake，withdiversotherthelikeordersandadvices。Thegov-
ernorsittethtotheend，toputinexecution，byhispublicau-
thority，thedecreesandordersofthetirsan，iftheyshouldbedisobeyed，thoughthatseldomneedeth；suchreverenceandobediencetheygivetotheorderofnature。
Thetirsandothalsotheneverchooseonemanfromamonghissons，toliveinhousewithhim，whoiscalledeveraftertheSonoftheVine。Thereasonwillhereafterappear。Onthefeastday，thefather，ortirsan，comethforthafterdivineserviceintoalargeroomwherethefeastiscelebrated；whichroomhathahalf-paceattheupperend。Againstthewall，inthemiddleofthehalf-pace，isachairplacedforhim，withatableandcarpetbeforeit。Overthechairisastate，maderoundorovalanditisofivy；anivysomewhatwhiterthanours，liketheleafofasilver-asp，butmoreshining；foritisgreenallwin-
ter。Andthestateiscuriouslywroughtwithsilverandsilkofdiverscolors，broidingorbindingintheivy；andiseveroftheworkofsomeofthedaughtersofthefamily，andveiledoveratthetop，withafinenetofsilkandsilver。Butthesubstanceofitistrueivy；whereofafteritistakendown，thefriendsofthefamilyaredesiroustohavesomeleaforsprigtokeep。Thetirsancomethforthwithallhisgenerationorlineage，themalesbeforehim，andthefemalesfollowinghim；andiftherebeamother，fromwhosebodythewholelineageisdescended，thereisatraverseplacedinaloftaboveontherighthandofthechair，withaprivydoor，andacarvedwindowofglass，leadedwithgoldandblue；whereshesitteth，butisnotseen。
Whenthetirsaniscomeforth，hesittethdowninthechair；
andallthelineageplacethemselvesagainstthewall，bothathisback，anduponthereturnofthehalf-pace，inorderoftheiryears）withoutdifferenceofsex，andstandupontheirfeet。
Whenheisset，theroombeingalwaysfullofcompany，butwellkeptandwithoutdisorder，aftersomepausetherecomethinfromthelowerendoftheroomataratan（whichisasmuchasaherald），andoneithersideofhimtwoyounglads：whereofonecarriethascrolloftheirshiningyellowparchment，andtheotheraclusterofgrapesofgold，withalongfootorstalk。
Theheraldandchildrenareclothedwithmantlesofsea-water-
greensatin；buttheherald’smantleisstreamedwithgold，andhathatrain。Thentheheraldwiththreecourtesies，orratherinclinations，comethupasfarasthehalf-pace，andtherefirsttakethintohishandthescroll。ThisscrollistheKing’schar-
ter，containinggiftofrevenue，andmanyprivileges，exemp-
tions，andpointsofhonor，grantedtothefatherofthefamily；
anditiseverstyledanddirected，"Tosuchanone，ourwell-
belovedfriendandcreditor，"whichisatitleproperonlytothiscase。Fortheysay，theKingisdebtortonoman，butforpropagationofhissubjects；thesealsettotheKing’scharteristheKing’simage，embossedormouldedingold；andthoughsuchchartersbeexpeditedofcourse，andasofright，yettheyarevariedbydiscretion，accordingtothenumberanddignityofthefamily。Thischartertheheraldreadethaloud；andwhileitisread，thefather，ortirsan，standethup，supportedbytwoofhissons，suchashechooseth。
Thentheheraldmounteththehalf-pace，anddelivereththecharterintohishand：andwiththatthereisanacclamation，byallthatarepresent，intheirlanguage，whichisthusmuch，"HappyarethepeopleofBensalem。"Thentheheraldtakethintohishandfromtheotherchildtheclusterofgrapes，whichisofgold；boththestalk，andthegrapes。Butthegrapesaredaintilyenamelled：andifthemalesofthefamilybethegreaternumber，thegrapesareenamelledpurple，withalittlesunsetonthetop；ifthefemales，thentheyareenamelledintoagreen-

berasmanyastherearedescendantsofthefamily。Thisgoldenclustertheheralddeliverethalsotothetirsan；whopresentlydeliverethitovertothatsonthathehadformerlychosen，tobeinhousewithhim：whobearethitbeforehisfather，asanensignofhonor，whenhegoethinpubliceverafter；andisthereuponcalledtheSonoftheVine。Afterthisceremonyendedthefather，ortirsan，retireth，andaftersometimecomethforthagaintodinner，wherehesittethaloneunderthestate，asbefore；andnoneofhisdescendantssitwithhim，ofwhatdegreeordignitysoever，excepthehaptobeofSalo-
man’sHouse。Heisservedonlybyhisownchildren，suchasaremale；whoperformuntohimallserviceofthetableupontheknee，andthewomenonlystandabouthim，leaningagainstthewall。Theroombelowhishalf-pacehathtablesonthesidesforthegueststhatarebidden；whoareservedwithgreatandcomelyorder；andtowardtheendofdinner（whichinthegreatestfeastswiththemlastethneveraboveanhourandahalf）thereisahymnsung，variedaccordingtotheinventionofhimthatcomposethit（fortheyhaveexcellentpoesy），butthesubjectofitisalwaysthepraisesofAdam，andNoah，andAbraham；whereoftheformertwopeopledtheworld，andthelastwasthefatherofthefaithful：concludingeverwithathanksgivingforthenativityofourSaviour，inwhosebirththebirthsofallareonlyblessed。
Dinnerbeingdone，thetirsanretirethagain；andhavingwithdrawnhimselfaloneintoaplace，wherehemakethsomeprivateprayers，hecomethforththethirdtime，togivetheblessing；withallhisdescendants，whostandabouthimasatthefirst。Thenhecalleththemforthbyoneandbyone，bynameashepleaseth，thoughseldomtheorderofagebeinverted。
Thepersonthatiscalled（thetablebeingbeforeremoved）
kneelethdownbeforethechair，andthefatherlayethhishanduponhishead，orherhead，andgiveththeblessinginthesewords："SonofBensalem（ordaughterofBensalem），thyfathersaithit；themanbywhomthouhastbreathandlifespeakeththeword；theblessingoftheeverlastingFather，thePrinceofPeace，andtheHolyDovebeuponthee，andmakethedaysofthypilgrimagegoodandmany。"Thishesaithtoeveryofthem；andthatdone，iftherebeanyofhissonsofemi-

Bythattimesixorsevendayswerespent，Iwasfallenintostraightacquaintancewithamerchantofthatcity，whosenamewasJoabin。HewasaJewandcircumcised；fortheyhavesomefewstirpsofJewsyetremainingamongthem，whomtheyleavetotheirownreligion。Whichtheymaythebetterdo，becausetheyareofafardifferingdispositionfromtheJewsinotherparts。ForwhereastheyhatethenameofChrist，andhaveasecretinbredrancoragainstthepeopleamongwhomtheylive；these，contrariwise，giveuntoourSaviourmanyhighattributes，andlovethenationofBensalemextremely。SurelythismanofwhomIspeakwouldeveracknowledgethatChristwasbornofaVirgin；andthathewasmorethanaman；andhewouldtellhowGodmadehimruleroftheseraphim，whichguardhisthrone；andtheycallhimalsotheMilkenWay，andtheEliahoftheMessiah，andmanyotherhighnames，whichthoughtheybeinferiortohisdivinemajesty，yettheyarefarfromthelanguageofotherJews。AndforthecountryofBen-
salem，thismanwouldmakenoendofcommendingit，beingdesirousbytraditionamongtheJewstheretohaveitbelievedthatthepeoplethereofwereofthegenerationsofAbraham，byanotherson，whomtheycallNachoran；andthatMosesbyasecretcabalaordainedthelawsofBensalemwhichtheynowuse；andthatwhentheMessiasshouldcome，andsitinhisthroneatHierusalem，theKingofBensalemshouldsitathisfeet，whereasotherkingsshouldkeepagreatdistance。ButyetsettingasidetheseJewishdreams，themanwasawisemanandlearned，andofgreatpolicy，andexcellentlyseeninthelawsandcustomsofthatnation。
AmongotherdiscoursesonedayItoldhim，Iwasmuchaf-
fectedwiththerelationIhadfromsomeofthecompanyoftheircustominholdingthefeastofthefamily，forthat，me-
thought，Ihadneverheardofasolemnitywhereinnaturedidsomuchpreside。Andbecausepropagationoffamiliespro-
ceedethfromthenuptialcopulation，Idesiredtoknowofhimwhatlawsandcustomstheyhadconcerningmarriage，andwhethertheykeptmarriagewell，andwhethertheyweretiedtoonewife？Forthatwherepopulationissomuchaffected，andsuchaswiththemitseemedtobe，thereiscommonlyper-
missionofpluralityofwives。Tothishesaid：
"Youhavereasonfortocommendthatexcellentinstitutionofthefeastofthefamily；andindeedwehaveexperience，thatthosefamiliesthatarepartakersoftheblessingsofthatfeast，doflourishandprospereverafter，inanextraordinarymanner。
Buthearmenow，andIwilltellyouwhatIknow。YoushallunderstandthatthereisnotundertheheavenssochasteanationasthisofBensalem，norsofreefromallpollutionorfoulness。Itisthevirginoftheworld；Iremember，IhavereadinoneofyourEuropeanbooks，ofaholyhermitamongyou，thatdesiredtoseethespiritoffornication，andthereap-
pearedtohimalittlefouluglyEthiope；butifhehaddesiredtoseethespiritofchastityofBensalem，itwouldhaveappearedtohiminthelikenessofafairbeautifulcherub。Forthereisnothing，amongmortalmen，morefairandadmirablethanthechastemindsofthispeople。
"Know，therefore，thatwiththemtherearenostews，nodis-
solutehouses，nocourtesans，noranythingofthatkind。Nay，theywonder，withdetestation，atyouinEurope，whichpermitsuchthings。Theysayyehaveputmarriageoutofoffice；formarriageisordainedaremedyforunlawfulconcupiscence；
andnaturalconcupiscenceseemethasaspurtomarriage。Butwhenmenhaveathandaremedy，moreagreeabletotheircor-
ruptwill，marriageisalmostexpulsed。Andthereforetherearewithyouseeninfinitementhatmarrynot，butchooseratheralibertineandimpuresinglelife，thantobeyokedinmarriage；
andmanythatdomarry，marrylate，whentheprimeandstrengthoftheiryearsarepast。Andwhentheydomarry，whatismarriagetothembutaverybargain；whereinissoughtalliance，orportion，orreputation，withsomedesire（almostin-
different）ofissue；andnotthefaithfulnuptialunionofmanandwife，thatwasfirstinstituted。Neitherisitpossiblethatthosethathavecastawaysobaselysomuchoftheirstrength，shouldgreatlyesteemchildren（beingofthesamematter）aschastemendo。Solikewiseduringmarriageisthecasemuchamended，asitoughttobeifthosethingsweretoleratedonlyfornecessity；no，buttheyremainstillasaveryaffronttomar-
riage。
"Thehauntingofthosedissoluteplaces，orresorttocourte-
sans，arenomorepunishedinmarriedmenthaninbachelors。
Andthedepravedcustomofchange，andthedelightinmere-
triciousembracements（wheresinisturnedintoart），makethmarriageadullthing，andakindofimpositionortax。Theyhearyoudefendthesethings，asdonetoavoidgreaterevils；
asadvoutries，defloweringofvirgins，unnaturallust，andthelike。Buttheysaythisisapreposterouswisdom；andtheycallitLot’soffer，whotosavehisguestsfromabusing，offeredhisdaughters；nay，theysayfurther，thatthereislittlegainedinthis；forthatthesamevicesandappetitesdostillremainandabound，unlawfullustbeinglikeafurnace，thatifyoustoptheflamesaltogetheritwillquench，butifyougiveitanyventitwillrage；asformasculinelove，theyhavenotouchofit；andyettherearenotsofaithfulandinviolatefriendshipsintheworldagainasarethere，andtospeakgenerally（asIsaidbe-
fore）Ihavenotreadofanysuchchastityinanypeopleastheirs。Andtheirusualsayingisthatwhosoeverisunchastecannotreverencehimself；andtheysaythatthereverenceofaman’sself，is，nextreligion，thechiefestbridleofallvices。"
AndwhenhehadsaidthisthegoodJewpausedalittle；
whereuponI，farmorewillingtohearhimspeakonthantospeakmyself；yetthinkingitdecentthatuponhispauseofspeechIshouldnotbealtogethersilent，saidonlythis；thatI
wouldsaytohim，asthewidowofSareptasaidtoElias："thathewascometobringtomemoryoursins；"andthatIconfesstherighteousnessofBensalemwasgreaterthantherighteous-
nessofEurope。Atwhichspeechhebowedhishead，andwentonthismanner：
"Theyhavealsomanywiseandexcellentlaws，touchingmarriage。Theyallownopolygamy。Theyhaveordainedthatnonedointermarry，orcontract，untilamonthbepastfromtheirfirstinterview。Marriagewithoutconsentofparentstheydonotmakevoid，buttheymulctitintheinheritors；forthechildrenofsuchmarriagesarenotadmittedtoinheritaboveathirdpartoftheirparents’inheritance。Ihavereadinabookofoneofyourmen，ofafeignedcommonwealth，wherethemarriedcouplearepermitted，beforetheycontract，toseeoneanothernaked。Thistheydislike；fortheythinkitascorntogivearefusalaftersofamiliarknowledge；butbecauseofmanyhiddendefectsinmenandwomen’sbodies，theyhaveamorecivilway；fortheyhaveneareverytownacoupleofpools（whichtheycallAdamandEve’spools），whereitispermittedtooneofthefriendsoftheman，andanotherofthefriendsofthewoman，toseethemseverallybathenaked。"
Andaswewerethusinconference，therecameonethatseemedtobeamessenger，inarichhuke，thatspakewiththeJew；whereuponheturnedtome，andsaid，"Youwillpardonme，forIamcommandedawayinhaste。"Thenextmorninghecametomeagain，joyfulasitseemed，andsaid："Thereiswordcometothegovernorofthecity，thatoneofthefathersofSalomon’sHousewillbeherethisdayseven-night；wehaveseennoneofthemthisdozenyears。Hiscomingisinstate；

Thedaybeingcomehemadehisentry。Hewasamanofmiddlestatureandage，comelyofperson，andhadanaspectasifhepitiedmen。Hewasclothedinarobeoffineblackclothandwidesleeves，andacape：hisunder-garmentwasofex-
cellentwhitelinendowntothefoot，girtwithagirdleofthesame；andasindonortippetofthesameabouthisneck。Hehadglovesthatwerecurious，andsetwithstone；andshoesofpeach-coloredvelvet。Hisneckwasbaretotheshoulders。
Hishatwaslikeahelmet，orSpanishmontero；andhislockscurledbelowitdecently；theywereofcolorbrown。Hisheardwascutroundandofthesamecolorwithhishair，somewhatlighter。Hewascarriedinarichchariot，withoutwheels，lit-
ter-wise，withtwohorsesateitherend，richlytrappedinbluevelvetembroidered；andtwofootmenoneachsideinthelikeattire。Thechariotwasallofcedar，giltandadornedwithcrystal；savethattheforeendhadpanelsofsapphiressetinbordersofgold，andthehinderendthelikeofemeraldsofthePerucolor。Therewasalsoasunofgold，radiantuponthetop，inthemidst；andonthetopbeforeasmallcherubofgold，withwingsdisplayed。Thechariotwascoveredwithcloth-of-
goldtissueduponblue。Hehadbeforehimfiftyattendants，youngmenall，inwhitesatinloosecoatsuptothemid-leg，andstockingsofwhitesilk；andshoesofbluevelvet；andhatsofbluevelvet，withfineplumesofdiverscolors，setroundlikehat-bands。Nextbeforethechariotwenttwomen，bare-
headed，inlinengarmentsdowntothefoot，girt，andshoesofbluevelvet，whocarriedtheoneacrosier，theotherapastoralstafflikeasheep-hook；neitherofthemofmetal，butthecrosierofbalm-wood，thepastoralstaffofcedar。Horsemenhehadnone，neitherbeforenorbehindhischariot；asitseemeth，toavoidalltumultandtrouble。Behindhischariotwentalltheofficersandprincipalsofthecompaniesofthecity。Hesatalone，uponcushions，ofakindofexcellentplush，blue；andunderhisfootcuriouscarpetsofsilkofdiverscolors，likethePersian，butfarfiner。Hehelduphisbarehand，ashewent，asblessingthepeople，butinsilence。Thestreetwaswonder-
fullywellkept；sothattherewasneveranyarmyhadtheirmenstandinbetterbattle-arraythanthepeoplestood。Thewin-
dowslikewisewerenotcrowded，buteveryonestoodinthem，asiftheyhadbeenplaced。
Whentheshowwaspassed，theJewsaidtome，"IshallnotbeabletoattendyouasIwould，inregardofsomechargethecityhathlaiduponmefortheentertainingofthisgreatperson。"
ThreedaysaftertheJewcametomeagain，andsaid："Yearehappymen；forthefatherofSalomon’sHousetakethknowl-
edgeofyourbeinghere，andcommandedmetotellyouthathewilladmitallyourcompanytohispresence，andhaveprivateconferencewithoneofyou，thatyeshallchoose；andforthishathappointedthenextdayafterto-morrow。Andbecausehemeanethtogiveyouhisblessing，hehathappointeditintheforenoon。"Wecameatourdayandhour，andIwaschosenbymyfellowsfortheprivateaccess。Wefoundhiminafairchamber，richlyhanged，andcarpetedunderfoot，withoutanydegreestothestate；hewassetuponalowthronerichlyadorned，andarichclothofstateoverhisheadofbluesatinembroidered。Hewasalone，savethathehadtwopagesofhonor，oneitherhandone，finelyattiredinwhite。Hisunder-
garmentswerethelikethatwesawhimwearinthechariot；butinsteadofhisgown，hehadonhimamantlewithacape，ofthesamefineblack，fastenedabouthim。Whenwecamein，asweweretaught，webowedlowatourfirstentrance；andwhenwewerecomenearhischair，hestoodup，holdingforthhishandungloved，andinpostureofblessing；andweeveryoneofusstoopeddownandkissedtheendofhistippet。Thatdone，therestdeparted，andIremained。Thenhewarnedthepagesforthoftheroom，andcausedmetositdownbesidehim，andspaketomethusintheSpanishtongue：

"Thepreparationsandinstrumentsarethese：Wehavelargeanddeepcavesofseveraldepths；thedeepestaresunk600
fathoms；andsomeofthemarediggedandmadeundergreathillsandmountains；sothatifyoureckontogetherthedepthofthehillandthedepthofthecave，theyare，someofthem，abovethreemilesdeep。Forwefindthatthedepthofahillandthedepthofacavefromtheflatarethesamething；bothremotealikefromthesunandheaven’sbeams，andfromtheopenair。Thesecaveswecallthelowerregion。Andweusethemforallcoagulations，indurations，refrigerations，andcon-
servationsofbodies。Weusethemlikewisefortheimitationofnaturalminesandtheproducingalsoofnewartificialmetals，bycompositionsandmaterialswhichweuseandlaythereformanyyears。Weusethemalsosometimes（whichmayseemstrange）forcuringofsomediseases，andforprolongationoflife，insomehermitsthatchoosetolivethere，wellaccommo-
datedofallthingsnecessary，andindeedliveverylong；bywhomalsowelearnmanythings。
"Wehaveburialsinseveralearths，whereweputdiversce-
ments，astheChinesedotheirporcelain。Butwehavethemingreatervariety，andsomeofthemmorefine。Wealsohavegreatvarietyofcompostsandsoils，forthemakingoftheearthfruitful。
