TheSolitaryhadconsumedtheremainderofthatdayinwhichhehadtheinterviewwiththeyoungladies,withintheprecinctsofhisgarden。Eveningagainfoundhimseatedonhisfavouritestone。Thesunsettingred,andamongseasofrollingclouds,threwagloomylustreoverthemoor,andgaveadeeperpurpletothebroadoutlineofheathymountainswhichsurroundedthisdesolatespot。TheDwarfsatewatchingthecloudsastheyloweredaboveeachotherinmassesofconglomeratedvapours,and,asastrongluridbeamofthesinkingluminarydartedfullonhissolitaryanduncouthfigure,hemightwellhaveseemedthedemonofthestormwhichwasgathering,orsomegnomesummonedforthfromtherecessesoftheearthbythesubterraneansignalsofitsapproach。Ashesatethus,withhisdarkeyeturnedtowardsthescowlingandblackeningheaven,ahorsemanroderapidlyuptohim,andstopping,asiftolethishorsebreatheforaninstant,madeasortofobeisancetotheanchoret,withanairbetwixteffronteryandembarrassment。
Thefigureoftheriderwasthin,tall,andslender,butremarkablyathletic,bony,andsinewy;likeonewhohadallhislifefollowedthoseviolentexerciseswhichpreventthehumanformfromincreasinginbulk,whiletheyhardenandconfirmbyhabititsmuscularpowers。Hisface,sharp-featured,sun-burnt,andfreckled,hadasinisterexpressionofviolence,impudence,andcunning,eachofwhichseemedalternatelytopredominateovertheothers。Sandy-colouredhair,andreddisheyebrows,fromunderwhichlookedforthhissharpgreyeyes,completedtheinauspiciousoutlineofthehorseman’sphysiognomy。Hehadpistolsinhisholsters,andanotherpairpeepedfromhisbelt,thoughhehadtakensomepainstoconcealthembybuttoninghisdoublet。Heworearustedsteelheadpiece;abuffjacketofratheranantiquecast;gloves,ofwhichthatfortherighthandwascoveredwithsmallscalesofiron,likeanancientgauntlet;

theunrelentingridersateasifhehadbeenapartofthehorsewhichhebestrode;and,afterashortbutfuriouscontest,compelledthesubduedanimaltoproceeduponthepathataratewhichsooncarriedhimoutofsightoftheSolitary。

TheDwarfturnedhisrageontheyoungfarmer;and,byasuddeneffort,farmorepowerfulthanHobbieexpectedfromsuchaperson,freedhiswristfromhisgrasp,andofferedthedaggerathisheart。Allthiswasdoneinthetwinklingofaneye,andtheincensedReclusemighthavecompletedhisvengeancebyplungingtheweaponinElliot’sbosom,hadhenotbeencheckedbyaninternalimpulsewhichmadehimhurltheknifetoadistance。
