Itsheadandmoutharemoresimilarinappearancetothoseofahippopotamusthantoanyotherearthlyanimal,exceptthatfrom"
thesidesofthelowerjawbonetwomightyhornscurveslightlydownwardtowardthefront。
Itstwohugeeyesinspiredmygreatestcuriosity。Theyextendintwovast,ovalpatchesfromthecenterofthetopofthecraniumdowneithersideoftheheadtobelowtherootsofthehorns,sothattheseweaponsreallygrowoutfromthelowerpartoftheeyes,whicharecomposedofseveralthousandocellieach。
Thiseyestructureseemedremarkableinabeastwhosehauntswereuponaglaringfieldoficeandsnow,andthoughIfounduponminuteexaminationofseveralthatwekilledthateachocellusisfurnishedwithitsownlid,andthattheanimalcanatwillcloseasmanyofthefacetsofhishugeeyesashechooses,yetIwaspositivethatnaturehadthusequippedhimbecausemuchofhislifewastobespentindark,subterraneanrecesses。
Shortlyafterthiswecameuponthehugestaptthatwehadseen。
Thecreaturestoodfullyeightfeetattheshoulder,andwassosleekandcleanandglossythatIcouldhaveswornthathehadbutrecentlybeengroomed。
Hestoodhead—oneyeingusasweapproachedhim,forwehadfounditawasteoftimetoattempttoescapetheperpetualbestialragewhichseemstopossessthesedemoncreatures,whorovethedismalnorthattackingeverylivingthingthatcomeswithinthescopeoftheirfar—seeingeyes。
Evenwhentheirbelliesarefullandtheycaneatnomore,theykillpurelyforthepleasurewhichtheyderivefromtakinglife,andsowhenthisparticularaptfailedtochargeus,andinsteadwheeledandtrottedawayaswenearedhim,IshouldhavebeengreatlysurprisedhadInotchancedtoglimpsethesheenofagoldencollaraboutitsneck。
ThuvanDihnsawit,too,anditcarriedthesamemessageofhopetousboth。Onlymancouldhaveplacedthatcollarthere,andasnoraceofMartiansofwhichweknewaughteverhadattemptedtodomesticatetheferociousapt,hemustbelongtoapeopleofthenorthofwhoseveryexistencewewereignorant——possiblytothefabledyellowmenofBarsoom;thatoncepowerfulracewhichwassupposedtobeextinct,thoughsometimes,bytheorists,thoughtstilltoexistinthefrozennorth。
