LewreturnedonTuesday,withaviletemperandrheumatisminhisleftshouldersothathecouldnotwork,butstayedaroundthehouseandtooevidentlymadehiswifemiserablebyhispresence。OnWednesdaymorningMarianhadherhairdressedsolowoverherearsthatsheresembledaladyofoldColonialdays——butshedidnotquiteconcealfromBud’skeeneyestheuglybruiseonhertemple。Shewaspaleandherlipswerecompressedasifshewereafraidtorelaxlestsheburstoutintearsorinaviolentdenunciationofsomekind。Buddarednotlookather,noratLew,whosatgloweringatBud’srighthand。Hetriedtoeat,triedtoswallowhiscoffee,andfinallygaveuptheattemptandleftthetable。
