  wassoabsorbedinmindandperhapsImaysayshakeninnerve,bythestrainunderwhichIhadbeenlaboringforsometimenow,thatI
  stumbledupanextraflightofstairs,andwithoutanysuspicionofthefact,triedthedooroftheroomdirectlyovermine。ItisawondertomenowthatIcouldhavemadethemistake,forthehallsweretotallydissimilar,theoneabovebeingmuchmorecutupthantheonebelow,besidesbeingflankedbyagreaternumberofdoors。Buttheintoxicationofthemindisnotfarremovedfromthatofthebody,andasIsayitwasnottillIhadtriedthedoorandfounditlocked,thatIbecameawareofthemistakeIhadmade。

  Mymindthusassuredastothecorrectnessofmysuspicions,andthewaythuspavedtothecarryingoutofmyplans,Iallowedsomefewdaystoelapsewithoutfurtheractiononmypart。Mymotivewastoacquaintmyselfasfullyaspossiblewiththehabitsandwaysofthesetwodesperatemen,beforemakingtheattempttocapturethemuponwhichsomanyinterestshung。ForwhileIfeltitwouldbehighlycreditabletomysagacity,aswellasvaluabletomyreputationasadetective,torestoretheseescapedconvictsinanywaypossibleintothehandsofjustice,mychiefambitionafterallwastosomanagetheaffairastosavethewifeofMr。Blake,notonlyfromtheconsequencesoftheirdespair,butfromthepublicityandscandalattendantupontheopenarrestoftwoheavilyarmedmen。Strategy,therefore,ratherthanforcewastobeemployed,andstrategytobesuccessfulmustbefoundeduponthemostthoroughknowledgeofthematterwithwhichonehastodeal。Threedays,then,didIgivetotheacquiringofthatknowledge,theresultofwhichwasthepossessionofthefollowingfacts。
