Afteroneshortlessoninthealphabet,thestudentcantellhowanyGermanwordispronouncedwithouthavingtoask;

TherearesomeGermanwordswhicharesingularlyandpowerfullyeffective。Forinstance,thosewhichdescribelowly,peaceful,andaffectionatehomelife;
thosewhichdealwithlove,inanyandallforms,frommerekindlyfeelingandhonestgoodwilltowardthepassingstranger,clearuptocourtship;thosewhichdealwithoutdoorNature,initssoftestandloveliestaspects——withmeadowsandforests,andbirdsandflowers,thefragranceandsunshineofsummer,andthemoonlightofpeacefulwinternights;inaword,thosewhichdealwithanyandallformsofrest,respose,andpeace;thosealsowhichdealwiththecreaturesandmarvelsoffairyland;
andlastlyandchiefly,inthosewordswhichexpresspathos,isthelanguagesurpassinglyrichandaffective。ThereareGermansongswhichcanmakeastrangertothelanguagecry。
ThatshowsthattheSOUNDofthewordsiscorrect——itinterpretsthemeaningswithtruthandwithexactness;
andsotheearisinformed,andthroughtheear,theheart。
TheGermansdonotseemtobeafraidtorepeatawordwhenitistherightone。theyrepeatitseveraltimes,iftheychoose。Thatiswise。ButinEnglish,whenwehaveusedawordacoupleoftimesinaparagraph,weimaginewearegrowingtautological,andsoweareweakenoughtoexchangeitforsomeotherwordwhichonlyapproximatesexactness,toescapewhatwewronglyfancyisagreaterblemish。Repetitionmaybebad,butsurelyinexactnessisworse——
