Iwasgonetwenty-threedaysandwastravelingnineteenofthem,walking,riding;insailboats,inthecars,andonsteamers。IhavehadmoreexperiencesandadventuresthanI
everhadbeforeinthreemonthsandquiteenoughtolastmeforyears。
AftermyhappyridethroughTurkeyandtheretreatoftheGreekarmyinArta,ofwhichIwroteyoulast,IhavebeeninThessalywhereIsawthetwodays'battleofVelestinosfromthebeginninguptotheend。ItwastheonerealbattleofthewarandtheGreeksfoughtwellfromthefirsttothelast。
IleftAthensonthe29thofAprilwithJohnBass,aHarvardgraduate,andamostcharmingandattractiveyouthwhois,orwas,inchargeoftheJournalmen;StephenCranebeingamongthenumber。Heseemsageniuswithnoresponsibilitiesofanysorttoanyone,andIandBasslefthimatVelestinosaftertravelingwithhimforfourdays。CranewenttoVolo,asdideveryothercorrespondent,leavingBassandmyselfinVelestinos。Asthevillagershadrunaway,weburglarizedthehouseofthemayorandmadeitourhabitationwhilethecourierhuntedforfood。Itwaslike"TheSwissFamilyRobinson,"andwerejoicedoverthediscoveryofsoapandtableclothsandstrayknivesandforks,justasthoughwehadbeencastonadesertisland。BassdidthecookingandIlaidthetableandwashedupandmadethebeds,whichwerefulloffleas。Butwehadbeensleepingonchairsandonthefloorforaweeksowedidnotmindmuch。
