  Mahomet,perhaps,istheonlylawgiverwhohasdefinedtheprecisemeasureofcharity:thestandardmayvarywiththedegreeandnatureofproperty,asitconsistseitherinmoney,incornorcattle,infruitsormerchandise;buttheMussulmandoesnotaccomplishthelaw,unlesshebestowsatenthofhisrevenue;andifhisconscienceaccuseshimoffraudorextortion,thetenth,undertheideaofrestitution,isenlargedtoafifth。^105
  Benevolenceisthefoundationofjustice,sinceweareforbidtoinjurethosewhomweareboundtoassist。Aprophetmayrevealthesecretsofheavenandoffuturity;butinhismoralpreceptshecanonlyrepeatthelessonsofourownhearts。
