Motherswhisperedtotheirchildren,"Donotdrinkall,savealittledropwhenyouhavedrunk。"Andwhentheyhadcollectedallthedregstheyslippedthecupsoutunderthebottomofthecurtainwithoutliftingit。

AndhereandthereIsawawomansitapart。Theothersdancedandsangandfedtheirchildren,butshesatsilentwithherheadasideasthoughshelistened。Herlittlechildrenpluckedhergown;shedidnotseethem;shewaslisteningtosomesound,butshedidnotstir。
Therevelsgrewhigher。Mendranktilltheycoulddrinknolonger,andlaytheirheadsuponthetablesleepingheavily。Womenwhocoulddancenomoreleanedbackonthebencheswiththeirheadsagainsttheirlovers’
shoulders。Littlechildren,sickwithwine,laydownupontheedgesoftheirmothers’robes。Sometimes,amanrosesuddenly,andashestaggeredstruckthetablesandoverthrewthebenches;someleaneduponthebalustradessickuntodeath。Hereandthereonerosewhostaggeredtothewinejarsandlaydownbesidethem。Heturnedthewinetap,butsleepovercamehimashelaythere,andthewineranout。
Slowlythethin,redstreamranacrossthewhitemarbledfloor;itreachedthestonesteps;slowly,slowly,slowlyittrickleddown,fromsteptostep,fromsteptostep:thenitsankintotheearth。Athinwhitesmokeroseupfromit。
