PrinceCzartoryski,blindedbythedesireofvengeance,persuadedtheDietthattogivethetwosovereignsthesetitleswouldbemerelyaform,andthattheywouldneverbecomeanythingmorethanhonorary。Thismightbeso,butifPolandhadpossessedfar—seeingstatesmentheywouldhaveguessedthatanhonorarytitlewouldendintheusurpationofthewholecountry。
