  Nomeanshavebeenleftuntriedtoremedythedeficiency。Thegentlemanwhosenameismentionedinthepreface,andwho,fromthestatementtheremade,mightbesupposedabletofillthevacuum,hasdeclinedthetask-this,forsatisfactoryreasonsconnectedwiththegeneralinaccuracyofthedetailsaffordedhim,andhisdisbeliefintheentiretruthofthelatterportionsofthenarration。Peters,fromwhomsomeinformationmightbeexpected,isstillalive,andaresidentofIllinois,butcannotbemetwithatpresent。Hemayhereafterbefound,andwill,nodoubt,affordmaterialforaconclusionofMr。Pym’saccount。

  Mr。Pymhasgiventhefiguresofthechasmswithoutcomment,andspeaksdecidedlyofthe_indentures_foundattheextremityofthemosteasterlyofthesechasmsashavingbutafancifulresemblancetoalphabeticalcharacters,and,inshort,asbeingpositively_notsuch。_Thisassertionismadeinamannersosimple,andsustainedbyaspeciesofdemonstrationsoconclusiveviz。,thefittingoftheprojectionsofthefragmentsfoundamongthedustintotheindenturesuponthewall,thatweareforcedtobelievethewriterinearnest;
