Yetallthiswasapartfromanyextraordinarydilapidation。Noportionofthemasonryhadfallen;andthereappearedtobeawildinconsistencybetweenitsstillperfectadaptationofparts,andthecrumblingconditionoftheindividualstones。Inthistherewasmuchthatremindedmeofthespecioustotalityofoldwood-workwhichhasrottedforlongyearsinsomeneglectedvault,withnodisturbancefromthebreathoftheexternalair。Beyondthisindicationofextensivedecay,however,thefabricgavelittletokenofinstability。Perhapstheeyeofascrutinizingobservermighthavediscoveredabarelyperceptiblefissure,which,extendingfromtheroofofthebuildinginfront,madeitswaydownthewallinazigzagdirection,untilitbecamelostinthesullenwatersofthetarn。
