　　ThediseaseoftheladyMadelinehadlongbaffledtheskillofherphysicians。Asettledapathy，agradualwastingawayoftheperson，andfrequentalthoughtransientaffectionsofapartiallycatalepticalcharacter，weretheunusualdiagnosis。Hithertoshehadsteadilyborneupagainstthepressureofhermalady，andhadnotbetakenherselffinallytobed；but，ontheclosinginoftheeveningofmyarrivalatthehouse，shesuccumbedasherbrothertoldmeatnightwithinexpressibleagitationtotheprostratingpowerofthedestroyer；andIlearnedthattheglimpseIhadobtainedofherpersonwouldthusprobablybethelastIshouldobtain-thatthelady，atleastwhileliving，wouldbeseenbymenomore。
