　　Amongtheearliestsoundsofspringisthecheerful，simple，homelysongofthesong-sparrow；andinMarchwealsohearthepiercingcadenceofthemeadow-lark——tousoneofthemostattractiveofallbirdcalls。Oflateyearsnowandthenweheartherollicking，bubblingmelodyofthebobolinkinthepasturesbackofthebarn；andwhenthefullchorusoftheseandofmanyotherofthesingersofspringisdyingdown，therearesometruehot-weathersongsters，suchasthebrightlyhuedindigobuntingsandthistlefinches。Amongthefinchesoneofthemostmusicalandplaintivesongsisthatofthebush-sparrow——Idonotknowwhythebookscallitfield-sparrow，foritdoesnotdwellintheopenfieldslikethevesperfinch，thesavannah-sparrow，andgrasshopper-sparrow，butamongthecedarsandbayberrybushesandyounglocustsinthesameplaceswheretheprairiewarblerisfound。Norisitonlythetruesongsthatdelightus。Welovetoheartheflickerscall，andwereadilypardonanyoneoftheirnumberwhich，asoccasionallyhappens，isboldenoughtowakeusintheearlymorningbydrummingontheshinglesoftheroof。Inourearsthered-wingedblackbirdshaveaveryattractivenote。Welovethescreamingofthered-tailedhawksastheysoarhighoverhead，andeventhecallsofthenightheronthatnestinthetallwatermaplesbyoneofthewoodpondsonourplace，andthelittlegreenheronsthatnestbesidethesaltmarsh。Itishardtotelljusthowmuchoftheattractioninanybird-noteliesinthemusicitselfandhowmuchintheassociations。Thisiswhatmakesitsouselesstotrytocomparethebirdsongsofonecountrywiththoseofanother。Amanwhoisworthanythingcannomorebeentirelyimpartialinspeakingofthebirdsongswithwhichfromhisearliestchildhoodhehasbeenfamiliarthanhecanbeentirelyimpartialinspeakingofhisownfamily。
