  “Aha!Avoidtheladies,oroneisboundtogoamiss。“

  UponthisIapproachedhim,forIwasastonishedandamusedathisimpudence。
  “Forwhatyouhavedonethesailorswillmakeyoupayrightenough,“Iremarked。
  Hetuckedupthesleevesofhispea-jacketasthoughhewerepreparingforafight。Then,stampinghisfootupontheslipperygrating,hemuttered:
  “Iperceivedthemoptohavecomeuntied,andtobeindangeroffallingintothewaterthroughthevibration。UponthatI
  triedtosecureit,andfailed,foritslippedfrommyhandsasIwasdoingso。“

  OnabenchunderalanternnearthespotwhereIwaslyingastoutwomanwasasleep。Withonehandrestinguponasmallbundleunderherhead,shehadherbodicetornunderthearmpit,sothatthewhitefleshandatuftofhaircouldbeseenprotruding。Also,herfacewaslarge,darkofbrow,andfullofjowltoapointthatcausedthecheekstorolltoherveryears。
  Lastly,herthicklipswerepartedinanungainly,corpselikesmile。

  Suddenlysomethingnearmeflashedasthoughamatchhadbeenstruck,and,openingmyeyes,Iperceivedthepassengerinthecuriouspea-jackettobestandingnearthewomanspokenof,andengagedinshieldingalightedmatchwithhissleeve。Presently,heextendedhishandandcautiouslyappliedtheparticleofflametothetuftofhairunderthewoman’sarmpit。Therefollowedafainthiss,andanoxioussmellofburninghairwaswaftedtomynostrils。
  Ileaptup,seizedthemanbythecollar,andshookhimsoundly。
