In1779,Johnsongavetheworldaluminousproofthatthevigourofhismindinallitsfaculties,whethermemory,judgement,orimagination,wasnotintheleastabated;forthisyearcameoutthefirstfourvolumesofhisPrefaces,biographicalandcritical,tothemosteminentoftheEnglishPoets,publishedbythebooksellersofLondon。Theremainingvolumescameoutintheyear1780。ThePoetswereselectedbytheseveralbooksellerswhohadthehonorarycopyright,whichisstillpreservedamongthembymutualcompact,notwithstandingthedecisionoftheHouseofLordsagainsttheperpetuityofLiteraryProperty。Wehavehisownauthority,thatbyhisrecommendationthepoemsofBlackmore,Watts,Pomfret,andYalden,wereaddedtothecollection。
