  Besides,forthelastyearormoreamodificationhadbeengoingforwardinmymentalcondition,andwasgrowingmoreandmoremarked。Myinsightintothemindsofthosearoundmewasbecomingdimmerandmorefitful,andtheideasthatcrowdedmydoubleconsciousnessbecamelessandlessdependentonanypersonalcontact。Allthatwaspersonalinmeseemedtobesufferingagradualdeath,sothatIwaslosingtheorganthroughwhichthepersonalagitationsandprojectsofotherscouldaffectme。Butalongwiththisrelieffromwearisomeinsight,therewasanewdevelopmentofwhatIconcluded——asIhavesincefoundrightly——tobeaprovisionofexternalscenes。Itwasasiftherelationbetweenmeandmyfellow-menwasmoreandmoredeadened,andmyrelationtowhatwecalltheinanimatewasquickenedintonewlife。
  ThemoreIlivedapartfromsociety,andinproportionasmywretchednesssubsidedfromtheviolentthrobofagonizedpassionintothedulnessofhabitualpain,themorefrequentandvividbecamesuchvisionsasthatIhadhadofPrague——ofstrangecities,ofsandyplains,ofgiganticruins,ofmidnightskieswithstrangebrightconstellations,ofmountain-passes,ofgrassynooksfleckedwiththeafternoonsunshinethroughtheboughs:Iwasinthemidstofsuchscenes,andinallofthemonepresenceseemedtoweighonmeinallthesemightyshapes——thepresenceofsomethingunknownandpitiless。Forcontinualsufferinghadannihilatedreligiousfaithwithinme:totheutterlymiserable——theunlovingandtheunloved——thereisnoreligionpossible,noworshipbutaworshipofdevils。Andbeyondallthese,andcontinuallyrecurring,wasthevisionofmydeath——thepangs,thesuffocation,thelaststruggle,whenlifewouldbegraspedatinvain。
