  SUCHwasherstateofmindwhenthedogsoflawwereletlooseonher。MariatookthetaskofconductingDarnford’sdefenceuponherself。Sheinstructedhiscounseltopleadguiltytothechargeofadultery;buttodenythatofseduction。
  Thecounselfortheplaintiffopenedthecause,byobserving,"thathisclienthadeverbeenanindulgenthusband,andhadbornewithseveraldefectsoftemper,whilehehadnothingcriminaltolaytothechargeofhiswife。Butthatshelefthishousewithoutassigninganycause。Hecouldnotassertthatshewasthenacquaintedwiththedefendant;yet,whenhewasonceendeavouringtobringherbacktoherhome,thismanputthepeace—officerstoflight,andtookherheknewnotwhither。Afterthebirthofherchild,herconductwassostrange,andamelancholymaladyhavingafflictedoneofthefamily,whichdelicacyforbadethedwellingon,itwasnecessarytoconfineher。Bysomemeansthedefendantenabledhertomakeherescape,andtheyhadlivedtogether,indespiteofallsenseoforderanddecorum。Theadulterywasallowed,itwasnotnecessarytobringanywitnessestoproveit;buttheseduction,thoughhighlyprobablefromthecircumstanceswhichhehadthehonourtostate,couldnotbesoclearlyproved。——Itwasofthemostatrociouskind,asdecencywassetatdefiance,andrespectforreputation,whichshowsinternalcompunction,utterlydisregarded。"
  Astrongsenseofinjusticehadsilencedeverymotion,whichamixtureoftrueandfalsedelicacymightotherwisehaveexcitedinMaria’sbosom。Sheonlyfeltinearnesttoinsistontheprivilegeofhernature。Thesarcasmsofsociety,andthecondemnationsofamistakenworld,werenothingtoher,comparedwithactingcontrarytothosefeelingswhichwerethefoundationofherprinciples。[Shethereforeeagerlyputherselfforward,insteadofdesiringtobeabsent,onthismemorableoccasion。]
